Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

I am concerned with my deck as a final finished product too.
I want it to drain, and be protected at all points...
1: Bottom
2: Sides
3: Top
4: all mounting points..

#4 is the hard one for me! Mounting down stuff requires screws/bolts/etc..
and they all penetrate this already expensive well protected deck that will have so much work in it...

How do we do that the right way?

You figure that out, please share...

Good luck with the work, I hope to get some more done myself over the long weekend!

i plan on doing my deck like i stated above i will post pics as i go.
i too am concerned on hardware. i bought some deck screws that are rated not to rust. i'll use alum rivets and stainless steel nuts and bolts where ever i can. i also plan to use some kind of sealant in any pre-drilled holes ( i will search that product i've seen it before)
(someone should do a post of common and best materials to use on typical restores... like a sticky. you know what ply to use for transom ,floors. resins, sealants, paints, foam. and all the brand names with possitive and neg comments)
on the deck i will fasten first and seal the deck top last

good luck, keep posting, and use the search option.

everyone here is really great and helpfull people.

remember i was the guy who thought "rool and tip paint" meant tipping the boat so the paint would flow LOL
so i probably will win the stupid question award

Joe best or easiest way is a pressure washer either that or hands And knees with a green pad and some sort of cleaner :D.

Some brushing with baking soda in the event it's battery acid would be something to try.

If it's something saltwater based then a good wire brushing and power washing along with any other cleanser that doesn't react with aluminum.

Let the hull dry out in the sun for a couple of days so it's done dry before the Gluvit.

ok used some vinegar and a pressure washer and uncovered some small holes,
some 1/8 some larger. how should i repair them also some ribs have large rot. i was thinking of gluvit on small and fiberglass on larger. you can see the pitting around the hole

The fear I would have with just sealing anything is the structural damage..

The area around your holes in the deck, looks to be pretty thin.

And the ribs seem to have lost any strength...

I would consider replacing the ribs...

and a weld in patch for the floor...?

Try using steel puddy epoxy. It can be found at Carquest. That is used to repair fuel tanks so you could probably use it to fix the holes in the boat.

stuff like that can and will "pop" out of place...

A good smack on the bow from a wake can undo the work, and really make you wish you had bought that bigger bilge pump

How big an area are we talking about here? This is pretty severe. I'm thinking it really requires an aluminum patch. With the ribs in the way it would seem like it would have to occur on the outside of the hull. You're going to have to kinda re-skin the thing.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

ok this is where i fish or cut bait...this is what i was thinking, tell me what you all think, i need your input as i have never been here before

this is what i what i have

1- 2 small holes thru the hull
2- several corroded areas around the holes
3- about 2-3 ribs with holes

this is what i am thinking of doing ... followed by some questions(probably more as i go)

A- remove 6 ribs ( this will take me back to where there is no pitting at all might be alittle excessive but what's an extra rib or 2)

B- clean, grind, scrub what ever i have to do.

C- buy a sheet of alum. and install it on the inside of the hull

D- either try to fix the ribs i have or have new ones made

a & b are not tuff (just labor)

C-installing the new alum... i was told to take a flat piece and rivit in the middle
out to get the right pitch.
i would like to use something to bond the new alum to the hull before riviting

i thought i read somewhere here that there is some kind of adhesive for alum!
maybe 5200?

D- is there anything i can use to repair the ribs a couple have some large holes and will be taken to a metal shop but some might be a D.I.Y

how would i rivit this back together... tools and rivit types

what thickness of alum is needed

thanks

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

With that much visible corrosion I would need to see what is under the ribs before I went much further.

It could be too far gone to the point that repairs might not work well enough.

My two cents. :)
