All I have to say is wow! You are doing good with what problems you discovered. I'm not fooling with the foam... Double 1000 gph bilge pumps and call it good...

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

just an update

i haven't done much... been living off you're threads for my fix
PO had fiberglassed over the transom skin, having a heck of a time getting it all off.
i scored a wire feed welder with a upgradable to mig (135.00) off CL came with a nice cart, helmet, gauges. planning on playing with it alittle, i need to get a argon gas cylinder to do alum.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i have only one thing to say about fiberglass over aluminum. where it is prepped properly it is a pita to get off. one of the po's fiberglassed over the outside transom skin. where the wood transom rotted and corrison got to it it came off easy, the rest hammer, chisel and grinder.
i will admit it was nice to have some decent weather to work on it... heck the high winds help with the dust.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i know i shouldn't complain about the weather, but it's been the coldest winter down here in decades. working outside just stinks! it was nice out today and is suppose to be sunday too!
i gluvits the rivets and placed 2 20 ft large tarps over the hull with a light bulb hanging in there. 70 now might go to 50 tonite.

i bought a mig welder and have been playing with it as a wire feed. i need some $$ to buy an argon gas tank and the alum wire acess. for the welder.
i want to do a little welding on the boat and some on the alum trailer, thought it was a good way to add another tool to the garage.

i've been living off all you're threads... thanks

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

it was too nice of a day to do nothing on the boat. i planned to do some repair on other pcs while the gluvits dried but went to finish on 2 patches instead. i needed some help so i asked my wife as son was working. All i wanted her to do was hold the patch down and place a little washer over the rivet. things going pretty good, i'm under the boat putting some 5200 around the rivet and push it thru she puts the washer on (i gave her a small socket to push it down with as some were tougher than others). she goes somethings wrong! i wiggle out and get up and go what? she tells me the shinny thing squshed down abit. i explain that suppose to happen their rivets its how they hold. OK back to the bottom. things are going good, i hear oh no! what? what? i get back up and she never removed the socket! now it's riveted to the boat! bust that off and drill it out and start over (mentally repeating she's the mother of my children... do not kill her).

then murphy showed up to join my wife.

a few holes needed to be reamed abit, i reached for the drill and it fell, bending the only 3/16 bit i own. wiggle back out. hammer, hammer bits good enough!

That's some purty tin :D And that has to be about $700 worth of 5200! My fingers are currently gray from the stuff. 5200 takes a LONG time to cure. I'd leave those clamps on for 3-4 days.

thanks guys!

EZ- i bought several tubes of 5200 i think i have 2 left over. i reread the label on curing and probably will leave the clamps for a week. i was so nervous cutting the alum, but after close inspection on the edges i think it came out pretty good and i'm my worst critic

I really like what you did with that transom skin! I kinda sorta think I should have gone that route with mine rather than welded.

Nice work!

Looking good there on the transom:)

What did you use to cut the aluminum?

Glad to see your thread back on top of the resto page.

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i forgot to mention that there's enough alum from the cut off to finish the 2 sides above the main piece... couldn't have planned it that way

Looks great Joe..
I prob would have walked away..

also I was at a Sign tradeshow last week and this company had a air powered sheet metal tools that was cutting really intricate cutouts and rolled the edge as it cut..all I could think of..WOW..That could be handy for us tincan men!
