Re: fiberglass powerboat into a sailboat

thank you erikgreen you seam to have gotten what i have been talking about, my mom is a little more stubborn than me and I gave up on trying to change her mind a long time ago. I was for a while looking at an aluminum pole for the mast that my friend has and is willing to sell to me for 50 $ it is I think 40' will 30' be good for the mast? ones I tear the floor out I will be able to start building the mast support and ones that is built I can start rigging the forestay and shrouds. the goose neck for the boom I am building in auto tech on the lathe and with the welder it wont be pretty but it will probobly be the best looking thing on there. as for having a broken boat hull lying around she thinks that if I dont get it done but got the hull very cheap that I will be more likely to take the broken parts to the dump, compared to at least if I spend countless hours building a hull that dosent get completely done and not want to throw it away becouse I put so much work into it. I will be posting more pictures of my progress when it happens. probobly not until this Saturday or Sunday depends on my school and job.

how do you calculate the Ideal surface area of a sail for the weight of the boat?

Re: fiberglass powerboat into a sailboat

Matt - for your second project (cuz you seem determined to do this one), build a Thunderbird (http://www.thunderbirdsailing.org/) - in fact on the site there is a link to "Duane's new boat" that follows his project from plywood to sailing - I've seen the boat and it's a beauty.
TBird design was driven by a contest run by a timber company in the 60's (might have been 50's) to help find ways to sell more plywood.
There are fleets in the US - west coast and east coast - plus overseas. You can download the plans right from the web site.

Check it out - "Thunderbaby" is Duane's boat and it's a treat to hit the link and go through the full build.
