i'm trying to replace the impellor on my 1968 3hp evinrude yachtwin.
it looks like it has never been removed and is salted and well stuck in the lower unit.
I've soaked it in penetrating oil for a few days. I tried soaking it in very hot water as well.
Other than semi brute force to try and free it can anyone suggest a method.
thanks

Patience is a virtue with these scenarios.
Heat it, tap it, soak it, heat it, tap it, soak it. try with a rubber mallet to begin with but most likely you will have to "shock it" with a hammer to get it to move.
Good Luck.

I have found that brake fluid is a pretty good penetrant when left to "soak in"

Agree with the methods. The brake fluid is a good cheap way to do this. If you want to make it a better penetrate, mix in 50% acetone. There was an article a few years back that rated penetrating oils. A 50/50 mixture of acetone and power steering fluid came out on top (there was some confusion as to whether brake fluid or power steering fluid was used.) I have used the PS/acetone mix with a lot of success. Here is an extract from the article.

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

An impact driver might do the trick after the other methods fail. Better than just twisting it off w/o trying, anyway.

Thanks for the help, its now off - damaged the edge , but a bit off jb marine weld will fix that.
I like the suggestion to use brake fluid and acetone as a freeing agent.

Bonnie Scotland is not so bonnie just now, terrible weather.
Based in Glasgow which is handy for the water off the west coast.

The meanest trick the Irish ever played on the Scots, was telling them that the bagpipe is a musical instrument.

(Scotch Irish myself, out of McGregor and McAlpine)
