Hi, I am in the process of buying a 1996 Fletcher Arrowstreak 17GTS with a Mercruiser Alpha One 3.0LX (Digital Electronic Ignition System) 135hp Stern Drive. Is there anything I should know about with regard to the engine? Common problems etc.? Thanks, NewBuoy.

As with any engine it' all going to boil down to how well it was maintained. The 3.0's have been around forever. That particular setup with the digital ignition system I can't say though. Hopefully someone else will chime in

I own a 3.0L and can honestly say that I don't know of any weaknesses in this engine. They have been around forever (Noah used one in the Ark), and are rock solid! Parts are plentiful...both new and used.

I also still have one of the 470's...and the list of problems to watch out for runs several pages....

Happy boating!

I should add I have a project boat that when I get started on it will house a Merc 3.0.

And sink it did...! :D

Naw...I have a 'soft' spot in my heart fo my 470, and I'm keeping it for the day that I get the energy to fix it! In the meantime, you can send any contributions to:

ughhh... man I wish I caught this one earlier. If you do infact have distributorless ignition you better pray you never have a problem with. Make sure you keep those battery terminals clean and tight!! Distributorless ignition was discontinued by Merc some years ago, if you ever have a problem with a coil or a pickup, all the parts are no longer available and you'll have to convert the entire ignition system over.

Just curious. In case I ever come across one.

Is it possible to put a 3.0 points distributor and coil in one of these to get them going?

Yes, as long as you have the whole distributor and all related parts.

I looked and looked in the Adults Only section and could not find definitive proof that the 470 was put on the ark. Didn't one of the moderators on here help Noah build the thing???

Ayuh,... I'd be lookin' for something Newer than a Points distributer....
Just 'cause you're lookin' Used,.. Don't mean ya gotta go back to the begining of Time...

Just find a Complete igntion system, Not just a distributer...

Re: Please help. . . .

The 3.0s do have a little history of head gaskets and block cracking between 2 and 3. But if kept maintained and not overheated they are not a problem.
