Back to this pile o crap again, my old man managed to weld the shock straight with a mig, lots of patience and easy on the heat. Put it in an electric drill and it turns true. Now onto the lower unit, what do you guys use to seal up the 2 halves of the lower unit, I tried non hardening gasket maker and all it does is leak. What off the shelf Canadian Tire type gasket maker/silicone will work. I've read about aircraft this and that, don't think i'll find it there.

Thanks

Well, I tried the Permatex Aviation and it failed on me, so I wouldn't recommend that. If I had to do again I would get the 3M 847.

That's a fine engine not a piece of junk.

The proper stuff is 3M Scotchweld 847. You can try silicone, but it may fail. I've used blue Permatex with some success, however, I'd go to NAPA or your local dealer and pick up a tube of 3M.

Plan to switch to brass shear pins now that you have a solid shock absorber.

Oh it will have a new name once it's the way it should be, fine engine is fine by me. Just the whole shock thing frustrated me, first its broken, then the second one I bought which was thought to be good was broken. Anyways not to rant, I will try the 3m stuff and put a new spaghetti seal in it.

Thanks gents as always

Re: 55 evinrude 7.5

Someday one of us will get smart and start making a replacement driveshaft for these 5.5/7.5 motors that does away with the spring loaded shock absorber and acts like any other motor with a one-piece driveshaft. Can't be that hard to make a shaft like the, would it??

Oh yea, any skilled machinist with a machine shop can make one. All it is, is a piece of round stock machined on both ends.:D
