Well brought boat to shop. They checked it and said it had trash in the hole of tele tale. I made sure the fitting in cooling chamber, hose and adapter at housing was clear before I brought it to them. But what they did do was to run the boat on the trailer backed down a boat ramp. Engine ran fine for 20 minutes.
They charged me $92 for this.
But it did make me realize that I had the engine too high on the transom. I read that if you have a 6" setback (i have a cmc ptnt) you could have the cavitation plate slightly above the bottom of the boat. Mine was 1/2" above the bottom. But my boat is a 16' Tims welded flat and the center v which ends 12"from the transom must create too much turbulance that the engine sucks air and stops peeing.
I lowered the engine until the cavitation plate is 1/2" below the the bottom of the boat. Boat ran fine for most of the morning then after a long run I noticed the pee stream stopped again??
I dissembled the hose and found small white particles (salt crystals I'm guessing) in the discharge fitting at the housing.
I had a 48 spl that had just the hose sticking out of the housing. This 1981 70hp Johnson goes into a fitting which is reducing the ID and thus catches these particles.
MAIN QUESTION:
1. Can I run this 70 hp with the hose sticking out without the housing adapter?
2. Is there anything I can do to disolve these crystals? I run the boat on muffs with fresh water every time I use the boat.
Thanks,
Beck
Ps: Sorry for the long post.
