Grinding Noise In Outdrive

I have an 07 Volvo Penta with composite outdrive on by 26' Four Winns, and shortly after leaving the dock yesterday, a grinding/grumbling/growling noise started coming from the outdrive area (I couldn't pinpoint the source, but it was definitely coming from the outdrive and not the engine). At first I thought it might be the gimbal bearing or u-joint, but the noise was not any more pronounced when I turned the wheel. Contrarily, when the wheel was hard to port, the noise stopped. No problems with steering or engine performance were encountered.

Is this still the gimbal bearing or u-joint or is it something more/less sinister? Any insights would be appreciated!

Pull the drive and check the ujoint bellows for water.
Volvo has had bellows problems with that drive.
Water in the bellows = damaged gimal bearing and ujoints.

Thanks, Don.

That's about what I figured. Do you think this will be covered by warranty? The engine is an 07 with 115 hours on it.

I don't have a clue, check with your dealer. There was a campaign by Volvo to fix a bellows problem. But it expired Nov 1 of this year.
Might have your VP dealer look at service bulletins 44-1-59, 44-1-73, and 44-1-75
