I am looking at buying a 1990 4hp deluxe Johnson for $300 dollars. It runs great, but someone has drilled a 1/8" hole on the back of the motor above the muffler for a visable tell-tale. It puts out a nice flow of water when running. Any danger in this. I read iwombats directions on adding a tell-tale and this isnt it. Is $300 fair price.

Re: home made tell-tale

Strange thing to have done.

The muffler covers the exhaust relief hole in the exhaust housing and acts as a silencer. Normally you would get a small quantity of water coming from there. I don't really understand why you are getting much more from the additional hole.

The only problem as far as I can see will be that it will make it a bit more noisier.
I guess you could always plug the additional hole.

You do mean into the back of the leg immediately above that muffler. #2 in THIS DIAGRAM

I find I can't see the tell tale when under way anyway, so I opted for a temp guage on the dash.

Re: home made tell-tale

This hole was drilled 1 inch above top screw holding muffler, and in between two bolts. must have drilled into lower part of water jacket I guess. A little spray does comes out the muffler also, but not really visable. You dont see any problems with this. The engine does not get hot or show signs of ever getting hot. Dont know when this was done. Motor appears to be low hours. Does $300 seem like good price. Thanks for replys
