Gasket adhesive remover??

Hi, I have a non-OMC question, but I believe that it is generic enough to apply to any forum. I've posted the same question in the "other outboard" site, but it is not a "well-travel" section and I'm hoping to get some expert advice in short time.

OK, I've got a Martin 7.5 that I've just recently unstuck the lower piston. Now that everything is freed up, it's time to reassemble.

Problem: The head gasket is "cemented" to the recessed portion of the aluminum head where it is impossible to get any tools in to work it. Plus, the mating surface of this part of the head has circular "ridges" to improve sealing that cannot be marred.

The gasket is like concrete! What I want to do is soak the head to loosen up this gasket.

Any ideas of what to use?

Carb cleaner should work. I'd use the BRP Engine Tune.

Make sure when you reassemble, that the head gasket goes on dry. Whoever put it together last made a major booboo.

Soak in gas, carb cleaner as already mentioned or brake fluid. May take a while but you will get it in the end.

There is aerosol paint remover and gasket remover. spray well and let stand. a shallow pan of paint remover, lacquer thinner, gas (be very careful not really a good idea).

Stop at a car paint store (Sherwin-Williams pays the bills in my house) Any of the above is available there. Try the paint remover first, and work to thinner. Acetone might evaporate too fast.

While you are at that auto paint store see if they have some Acetone; probably do. It's a great solvent but keep it off your hands if you don't want them cracking......from lack of natural oils. Course I think Acetone is one of the elements of Beckmann's Carb Cleaner available at any auto parts store.

Methyl Ethyl Keytone (MEK) is great too.
