Hey guys, it's me newbie know nothing! I took your advice and changed the carrier seal, below the water pump, put the drive back together, did a pressure test and it still leaked out of the prop drive. Should I reseal the bearing carrier in the prop shaft? I don't know what to do now. Help! Never been this far before, looks like it's a rough one there. Shimms, seals, 210# tourque, Wow! This drive only has a littlle of 60 Hrs. on it.

Get a spray bottle with some soapy water in it. Then spay around the seals. When it starts blowing bubbles, you will see where the leak is, that is what is leaking and you know what to fix then. Spray everything, you could have more than one leak.

Should I reseal the bearing carrier in the prop shaft?

If it's leaking you should. But do the checking first, fix what is leaking, then retest to make sure your repair worked. I've damaged many seals over the years when installing them. That is why I always pressure test again after the repair.

And if you can submerge the drive in water while testing, even better. 'nutcase

One bad part of the Gen II is the 2 seals (in the upper) on the vertical drive shaft. They are a weak spot on the Gen II. You can dislodge them easily with a little shaky mating with the lower. Just plastic seals, no metal band so they don't fit that tight to began with. Causing the upper to lose oil and fry itself. Keep an eye on the reservoir.

They go in from the inside. If you replace them; clean the housing real good before you install them and run a tiny bead of superglue around where the seal and case meet, on the top seal. And grease the crap out of them between the upper and lower seals before you mate with lower.

Re: Merc. A-1, Gen 2, Drive Unit, stopped leak, do I need to vacuum test the drive?

Re: Merc. A-1, Gen 2, Drive Unit, stopped leak, do I need to vacuum test the drive?

Hey guys, it's me old dumb newbie, I followed your advise and put new seals in the upper and lower units. I put 2 new carrier seal assemblys in the lower housing and put 2 new oil seals in the upper housing along with a water pipe grommet I messed up putting the 2 halfs together. That being said, I finally got the leak stopped. (I'm a little slow but consistent). I pressure tested the whole drive at 15 PSI for 2 days and it held solidly. Question now is do I really need to vacuum test it? If so, I can't seem to find a thread that helps me. Would someone enlighten me please.

Thanks

Yes. A pressure test is checking to make sure that oil can't get out. A vacuum test checks to make sure water can't get in.

achris, I have that same setup, exactly, However, I don't know how to do the vacuum test. I'm not to smart the first time through, just need a guide.

Set up the same way you did for a pressure test, but instead of pushing air in, pull it out....
