was watching a show on gators and hippos, how they have to endure 6 months of draut and I was wondering how come nobody thought of putting up a dam to keep the river form draining? not a massive Hoover Dam kinda thing, but just a few small ones to keep the water levels higher. Surely it wont mess up the eco system too much. A series of dams would help the plants as well. Since mankind messes up the planet more and more every day, surely we could spend a few bucks helping out once in a while. the continent used to be a rainforest, I'm sure humanity had something to do with turning it into a desert

Nope, leave it alone. Damming up rivers changes more than you can possibly imagine.
They are wild animals, leave them alone. Let them fend for themselves.
Nice troll statement at the end, which of course isn't true, but someone thinks it is, I am sure of it too.

And while you are at it, fill in the Chicago canal, quit draining Lake Michigan, and keep those pesky silver carp out of the great lakes.

I don't know the specific area involved, but such dry periods are common in Africa. If I am not mistaken, this has been true for centuries, if not longer.

I don't really know if man's activities have worsened this situation and I sure don't want to start a debate over that, but further changes in the natural order of things, could end up being a far bigger problem. My guess is that it would be a lot smarter to spend more time dealing with the root causes of the problem over a long period of time, than to mess with the ecosystem.

To paraphrase the late Sam Kinneson:

Don't send supplies to build a dam, send trucks and busses to move them out of the desert. It's sand. Nothing grows, and know what it's going to be a hundred years from now? Sand! We have deserts in America, we just don't live in them!!!!!!Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Sorry, it's so early I'm hardly awake.......

Nature's checks and balance, drought = migration , certain organisms survive the dryed up barren lanscape then the rains come and everything renews.

The desert looks like a dry barren place that needs help. If you've ever seen the desert bloom after a good rain, you'll realize that it is actually a unique place well designed for it's inhabitants, also well designed.

It sparks a series of natural events and feeding frenzy each time the river dried up and filled. It's Mother Nature way of nurturing ALL of her inhabitants. The Planet Earth series on Discovery documented these events, amazing stuffs.
