Re: 1996 48 spl "hot" light stays on

question, is it a 50 that has had the OMS pump remove, and pre mixed pump installed.

if not mistaken the 48 only has one alarm OVERHEAT

The 50 would have these if not disconnected.

J/E Alarms

low oil alarm is a beep every 30 seconds. beep......................beep...................

no oil alarm is a beep every 1/2 second or so.beep, beep, beep

overheat and fuel restriction alarm is a constant beep.beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

Yes the oil mixer is gone. And I premix myself.

Just because the telltale stream is nice and steady does not mean that your engine is being cooled.....ala your thermostat is functioning properly. I don't know how your engine is plumbed, but some telltales are connected to the head water jacket and some are connected elsewhere. Some telltales squirt as long as the engine is running and some don't squirt unless the stat is open. I know Mercs have both types; don't know about OMC.

I'd pull the stat and put it on the kitchen stove with a candy thermometer in a pot of water over a low fire. The stat should start to open at around 140F and be fully open over another 15 or so degrees.

Also, while the stat is out, on muffs, fire it up and see if you get water coming out of the stat hole in the engine....obviously you have to wait a minute for the pump to pump the water up there. Water should flow nice and smoothly out the hole at 1000 rpm. If you get it, don't keep running the engine.

If those tests are good then it's a good guess that you have a temp sensor or wiring problem.

Re: 1996 48 spl "hot" light stays on

So the 48 special didnt have VRO.....but the same year 50 would have it.

do they make a seperate control for the 48 special or do both motors use the same control?

I keep thinking mixed matched components can throw off things.

I have a systems check tach and the HOT light always stays on...

and i get the beep for all clear right after I start up, then I get a constant beep for 10 seconds about 2 minutes after start up EVERY TIME I START the motor, then it goes off...the motor has never gotten hot( i have temp guage and sending units) VRO is disconneted

so my point is , to me these warnings have quirks.

my buddy gave me his 1988 48 special and he told me that if he idled long the warning horn went off...but if he got under power a little it goes off...

if you do not have the OIL plug connected to a VRO oil tank set up..can the no oil and low oil alarms possibly go off at all?

seems he is getting a no oil alarm on a motor that never came with VRO....unless the motor cover has been switched at some point and it is a 50hp.

Re: 1996 48 spl "hot" light stays on

well i called my local marine mechanic. i found out that it might be a sensor so cause he told me to turn the key and see if the lights first come on then wait and see if the light goes off. with the motor off it does turn on without the motor even running.

same happens with the alarm on my 115.....comes on 2 minutes after you turn the key, wether the motor is on or not....

reminds me I got to tape some sound proof material on that dang alarm....it is duck season and i dont need that noise every time i turn the motor on and drive for 2 minutes then beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..........p
