A good buddy of mine has a MW sea king 7.5 that he is willing to sell to me fairly cheap. I don't know the year but he said it is late 70's. It runs good but needs an impeller. Getting the impeller is not a problem for me but my question is...I notice on a lot of pictures of this type of motor it looks like it has an internal gas tank. How much gas does it hold and can I hook an external gas supply to the engine? I'm assuming it's a two stroke. I really didn't get many details about the motor from him because we dicussed the motor sale quickly before we left deer camp this past week.

Whether you can run an external line to a tank depends on the motor...some can be refitted/plumbed for a fuel pump, some can't. If you can post a model/serial number or a photo, or both, we can ID it for you and tell you if it's possible. Built-in tanks are generally 2 gallons or less, but they will run a long time and go aways on that. And it's not hard to refuel afloat, after you do it a couple of times.

Without knowing more about the motor, it would be pretty hard to answer the question. It probably is a Clinton motor, but might be a Chrysler. But I'm not aware of either having a built-in tank on a 7.5hp. Might be the Clinton does---perhaps a cheapo "on sale" version?

OK...here's a little more info. It has an external tank. the internal tank vs. external tank confusion stems from some video and pictures I found on the web that showed some sea kings with a gas tank mounted in the engine cover just like a lawn mower. He will be getting me serial numbers here shortly and he verified that it is a late 70' model.

Stay tuned....

In my opinion these motors are marginal performers;both in reliability and speed.
If you like to tinker they usually need it. These have earned a reputation of being heart breakers.

Yea, I've been doing some net lurking and that seems to be the general opinion on these engines. My buddy said that he never had a problem with it so I'm sure Murphy's law will swing my way and the darn thing will puke on me...

here's another stupid question....do all MG Ward 7.5 sea kings have a neutral to forward gear switch or are they start and go with no neutral? Again, late 70' model serial no. unkown at this point.

Back to the beginning---who made it? Chryslers have a gearshift, Clintons don't. Some Eskas have a neutral clutch that never worked.

Wow...no gear shift on the clintons? There's an egnineer out there somewhere who should be shot.

The Clintons and Eskas were designed with only one thing in mind, CHEAP. Gears and shifts cost money. They sold for cheap and cheap they were.

Evinrude and Johnson came out with a modified 6hp in the 1960's with no shift, calling it a 5hp. The intent was to offer a quality motor at a low price to compete with the Clintons and Eskas. It bombed.

OK...now, if the clintons have no neutral, does it idle really low when you start it up so it doesn't really move much? I can't imagine that it would start moving forward at a good clip as soon as you start the engine:confused:...

Hey go back about another twenty years or so, and none of them had shifts. And some were pretty dang big too. Not only that, you sometimes stood up and started them with a rope. But back to the Clinton, you either have it pointed at open water, or you tied it to the dock. It doesn't take off like the space shuttle, but you don't want to crank it in a congested area or around swimmers either.

EDIT: Make that 30 years, before WWII.
