Hi all. I have a seagull forty plus that I have given a thorough clean out however, it will only start by using a power drill to turn it over and will only keep running at high revs. As soon as I reduce throttle, it cuts out. It does run nicely at revs though. Has new plug, points were cleaned and reset, tank and carb flushed and blown out with compressed air. Note: it was doing same thing when I bought it and was told it had not been used for a few years. Any clue where I should look next would be a great help. Thanks .

Sounds like you have dirty carb/low speed jets. Maybe remove and disassemble/clean carb. Good luck!

As suggested it sure sounds like a fuel supply problem in the idle circuit.
Tell us the details of what you have doine so far.

I'm smokin' my brain trying to remember-does that carburetor even HAVE "low speed jets"? Not as I remember it. Isn't it a tapered needle on the throttle valve?

Sounds more like a worn out motor to me.

That rings a bell; some times if the crank seals are bad it will be hard to start and
won't idle well.As FR suggested these motors use 3 different carbs all of them kind of oddball.See if you can find a aftermarket ser. manual for many brands at the library. There are 4 illustrations and a full page of text.

You aren't supposed to run a Sea Gull any length of time at idle anyway. The centrifugal water pump won't work at idle.

Thank you all for your comments. It does have carb with tapered needle valve which I do suspect may be the cause of my problems, so will look for a replacement and try that next. Again, thanks everyone.

I am not familiar with your particular engine but it sounds like there coul;d be a problem with the reed valves.ometimes chip or stick which messes up fuel metering to the cylinders.

My Tanaka 3HP has that single center jet with the tapered needle. Is your carb float level set and your idle screw set correctly? The tapered needles also sometimes have circular clips that you can move up and down to adjust the height of the needle in the jet. Also check your carb gasket for air in-leakage. The motor really should idle. Good Luck!

what I done with my seagull 40plus engine to get it running good it may work for you get a tennis ball cut a hole to fit the inlet outer circumference then poke holes all over the tennis ball don't go mad I then covered the wee holes one by one with the engine running with insulating tape till it ran perfect it does work like a air filter and it stops the seawater or rain getting in to the port Hope this helps it worked for me bun:D

Hey, bun! This is a four year old thread. Read rule #12:

12. Please do not post to threads that have been inactive for more than 3 months UN-LESS you are the original poster. We have very active forums and any thread that remains inactive for that long should be considered "dead". It is especially confusing when there is an entirely new question posted to an old thread. This is considered a hijack. Please start a new thread of your own.
