VRO?? Automatic Oil Injection????

I have a 1992 Evinrude E60TLENE 60hp, with the automatic oil injection. I am unfamiliar with this system and I am wondering:confused: if there is any sort of adjustment that can be done with this system. The reason I am looking to adjust it, is it seems to be over oiling. I am just judging this by how much smoke the motor seems to make. Is there anyway to test what the oil/fuel mixture is? I believe it to be required at 50:1. Thanks!!!

change to synthetic oil, smokes less. no adjustment.

Your oil injection system is designed to mix at the ratio you need. Adjustment could be very dangerous and expensive.
Excessive smoke could possibly be a sign of the pump failing. My old VRO over oiled when it started to fail. May well not be the case here though.

Another thing that will cause over oiling is a fuel restriction. That's the pump's way of trying to save your powerhead from a lean condition. Pretty smart, huh?

Thanks for the info guys, is there anyway to test this system to ensure it is working properly? I am a little wary of this system as i have heard of problems with it. I have thought to just disconnect it and premix my gas that way I know the engine is getting oil ( I have heard engines need this stuff ). How hard is it to disconnect the system? Also maybe my fears are unfounded and everything will be fine, how reliable are these and does anyone know if there is any safety shut-off if it quits working so I don't end up with a big anchor bolted to my transom?

It is an option to premix but there are varied views on the subject. 50 to 1 is the ratio. Personally I would make sure the fuel is flowing the way it should before moving on.

if you dissconect the oil feed and pre mix oil in the fuel you might have to rejet the carb as fuel wil be more viscus and could make it run lean:eek: just a thought good luck

I am fairly confident the fuel is flowing correctly as it starts and runs great. I can get about 40mph (GPS) with a 60hp with a 13x19 prop on a 16ft Lund console. Unfortunately I do not have a tach to tell the rpms at WOT. I am just trying to figure out if I should continue to trust this system. In some other threads I have read that these may be somewhat unreliable, I just bought the boat late September and I am still figuring out the quirks.

Well I went premix from the original VRO1 system that was on my motor for the fact that it was 23 years old and the premix pump was a whole lot cheaper.. However you still do not really know if there is a fuel restriction in there at this point. Could be nothing wrong with the pump at all.

It's a thought, but an incorrect one. Don't confuse the "lean" as in fuel:eek:il ratio with "lean" as in fuel:air ratio. There will be little appreciable difference in viscosity between unmixed petrol and that mixed at a 50:1 ratio. Besides, the premix pump is already mixing the oil with the gasoline before it goes to the carburetor, so the fuel-oil mixture presented to the jets will be the same in either case.

Easy to tell how much oil you're using. Mark the oil tank with a marker at the oil level with full fuel tank. Run the motor for an hour or so at a decent planing speed. Fill the fuel tank (so you know how much gas was consumed and refill the oil tank to the mark you made earlier from a graduated measuring cup.

Then you can easily tell whether the gas consumption and the oil use square with each other. BTW, I think your motor has OMS (which provided oil at a fixed 50:1 ratio), not VRO (which varied oil rate depending on RPM).

You do not have to rejet if you premix. The engine sees the same mixture either way. To test the system, use a magic marker and mark the level of the oil in the resevoir. Now run about 6 to 12 gallons of fuel through the engine. Add oil to bring the level back up to the line you previously made. If you ran about 6 gallons through the motor, it should take about 1 pint to bring the level up to the line. 2 pints if you ran about 12 gallons. I'm also a fan of synthetic or semi-synthetic oil.

Thanks for the input gentlemen, I will give this a try. Unfortunately it won't but be for another 5 months or so. Up here I could try to put the boat on the water but it would be a lot of holes to drill through the ice.......:(
