Re: 1955 Fastwin Evinrude, good model/year?

I am up to six 2 line tanks now , the tanks are all good, but none of the original hoses are any good, all brittle. I tried getting new 2 line hose from NAPPA and while i was told it is available i waited 6 months then called again and was met with blank stares , so i got modern single line and doubled it up. You have to rebuild the connectors , maybe the danger stories came from leakage of fuel at the connector. As well, an air leak will spoil the fun of a nice day out. I am going to run some of mine(when restored ) on the 2 line ones , but am also going to convert some to a fuel pump just for the fun of it. Which ever way you go, the old motors are fun , reliable, easy to work on and in my case cheap to obtain. Get a manual, lots of years are close.

You can buy the 6 gallon plastic tanks at Walmart for 25 bucks. You can also rebuild the fittings for the dual line tanks for $3.40 if you buy the o-rings through sierra marine. The fitting costs $137.00, so don't work on it in the boat and drop it in the water. So far the cheapest I can find the dual line is $90.84 for 50', you can get it here for $99.00.

Call laingsoutboards.com and they'll have you some 2line hose in 3 days for a reasonable price and reasonable shipping. :)
Single line tanks are easy to come by in my area, I saw one for $10 on craigslist the other day, and 25$ or less at walmart for the cheapo plastic ones.

Stay away from the Sierra O rings. they seem to be just a little bit off in size. Get the real ones from Laings also. They worked great for me. Rick

I agree. BRP o-rings for dual line couplers are perfect. Sierras are just a bit too big

I got the sierras - didn't know any better. They are big! They seal nice and tightly though. But it is hard to remove the gas line from the motor. Also, you have to disassemble the connector to get them in.

I love the old pressure tanks. They are very reliable and simple. I have 2.

BRP Bombardier Recreational Products. They bought the assets of OMC, Johnson, Evinrude when they went bankrupt. If they are originals from a dealer they are probably correct.
Here is a link for '68 and newer units. A lot of the lower unit parts carried over from the '54 and up 15HP. Rick

My local marina orders J/E parts from BRP. Just ask. If you need replacement 2-line hose, you'll need sierra parts, and you can order them through this site: http://www.iboats.com/Twin_Fuel_Line_Hose/dm/*******.624644793--**********.007159132--view_id.269091
I don't know if you must order a 50' roll. I ordered through NAPA (sierra catalog) and just got the length I needed for $2.99/ft (50% more than this site..I found out later). This site has the best prices I've found on sierra parts.. and replacement props!

I got a super new tool in the mail just the other day to replace these O-Rings from a certain member on this site, looks slick, can't wait to use it and if I never do I still think owning odd tools is cool., the grandkids will look at it when i'm gone and wonder what it is.

I did mine with it fully assembled. Picked them out with a dental pick and small crochet hook. Cleaned out the groove with a QTip and carb cleaner. Oiled up the new ones and slipped them in. Rick

Update : Just snagged an original 1955 owner's manual for this motor. At least I know what to call most of the parts!:)
Will post some photos of the motor and the initial testing...if everything checks out then I think a restoration is in order.
