Late 80s mariner 15hp turning on and off

Hi, I have a 15 hp mariner tiller thats acting strange. I can start it up and it will run fine for a while, but when im on the water at times, the motor wants to die. If I pull the choke in and out every ten seconds or so, it will make it back to shore. If I let it sit for a while, it will run perfectly then do the same thing again. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like a gummed up carb to me. Take the carb off, disassemble, soak parts in carb cleaner, install new carb kit, reassemble, reinstall, and boat on!

Hopefully thats it, ill try it this weekend. any other opinions on why it would do that?
