Reshape Aluminum Boat Transom

I am in the process of replacing all plywood in a 70's Peterborough 15' aluminum boat. This includes the transom. The transom has an aluminum skin on the rear which is a mild "V" curved shape (sorry I'm out of town so I can't snap a picture). There isn't a perfectly flat spot for the motor to mount to, so the aluminum cap is worn on either side where the motor mounts.

I want to fix this, and also have a spot for a 3hp kicker to the side of my 25hp. Is there any issue with cutting the aluminum to the desired shape? I will make a new transom cap out of square tubing, welded to the new shape and ensure that the plywood transom and pad reinforce the skin completely.

Re: Reshape Aluminum Boat Transom

Ok, so I've reshaped my transom. I've also done some other things since this post.

I've rebuilt the transom, the seat tops and front crossmembers out of 3/4" marine ply. I stained everything with water based Minwax stain, coated with three coats of West System and three coats of Behr spar varnish.

I'm about mid way through assembly. I'm using stainless hardware, 3M 5200 (below the waterline) and 3M Marine Silicon.

The interior will eventually get a textured coating. I'm leaning towards a coloured bedliner.
