I have a 1987 tiller steer pull start Evinrude 25hp outboard on my duck boat. Over the summer I had some trouble with it and took it to a mechanic to have some work done. He broke more than he fixed it seems and I think one of the things he broke is what is giving me so much trouble now. On the top of the carb there is (or was) a brass nipple that attaches to a hose that runs to the choke/primer assembly. I think this allows for a little shot of gas behind the carb to aid in starting. Anyway he broke it off and just kinda rigged a bigger piece of hose over the broken part and it keeps falling off. I have had a very hard time getting this engine to start when it is cold and think this is why. My question is can you buy a replacement for this nipple. I have looked at the exploded view on the OMC website and it does not show it as a part you can order. If you can't get it does anybody have any ideas of a way to fix it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Go back to the evinrude site, click on the menu to ob accessories for your year and look at fuel systems. Click on the primer pump kit, it this is?

you need the top half of the carb, not repairable. it is leaking air, which will make it extremely hard to run at all. present the bill the mechanic.

you may have to replace the complete carb.

That brass nipple is pressure fit into the carburetor. I do not know if you can buy a new part and it is not that easy to get the old one out. You might be able to buy some brass tubing from a hobby shop that would possibly fit over the stub that you have left (or fit in the inner diameter which would be even better). The old ball point pen refills were made of brass and they might work.

If that does not work, you can try to pull the old nipple out and get some brass tubing that fits. If you can't get a grip on the old nipple, try threading in a steel screw that is about the same size as the hole. Then you will have something to pull. Don't be tempted to drill it out unless you have the carburetor removed. You don't want to get any brass fillings in the engine which is what would happen.

Re: 87' 25hp carb parts help

I went back and checked the OMC site and still don't see that part listed. I still had the part that he broke off as it was still inside the hose. I had some gas tank sealant\glue and decided to glue the part in place and then pack some of that two part epoxy putty around it. Before the putty had time to harden I decided that wasn't gonna work. I ended up shoving a piece of one of those red tubes that comes on a can of WD40 down inside the brass part and sliding the hose over it. I am not sure how well it will stay with the vibration from the motor but it is better than it was. Thanks for your help guys.

Pm me your address and will send you a nipple. It is the same nipple on the V-4/6 carbs. I have a 35mm film can 1/2 full from carbs that where scrapped out. Just remove carb and take a small punch and knock it out, apply some Loctite to replacement and tap back in place. :D

you can also use the nipples pressed in the transfer port covers on the old crossflow motors.
thats why I keep junk parts about.
not the first one ever got broke.
