Ok I have been over all the charts I could find and I cant ID this Johnson

This is a 3 cyl 70 HP Judging by the coils and pack its a 1970's motor

The Plate is marked Ser J0001078 Mod 70443-M
No power trim and looks like a 20" shaft
Im guessing its a 1978 70 HP but I cant match these numbers anywhere

Re: Mystery Motor??

Its not a Johnson - its a 1974 Evinrude. If you got the serial number off of the Welch Plug on the powerhead, its probably because someone put a Johnson powerhead on an Evinrude motor. This is something that is not all all unusual.

It is also fairly common to find Johnson cowlings on Evinrude outboards, and vice-versa.

I think Jay meant that someone put an Evinrude powerhead on a Johnny.

Well the Numbers came off the ID plate. The motor was white and had an Johnny hood on it. But the ID plate don't lie. I just figured the J in the ser number was for Johnson

And these plates don't mean a whole lot, my 83 Johnson has an 88 powerhead with an 83 plug LOL

Re: Mystery Motor??

Nope, I meant a Johnson powerhead on an ERude. He has an ERude model number, which most likely came off of the data plate, which would be on the swivel bracket, and a Johnson (hence the "J") serial number, which would have come off of the Welch Plug in the powerhead. You wouldn't have a "J" serial number on a data plate with an Evinrude model number.

Most likely an Evinrude, painted white, with a Johnson powerhead and cover.

Re: Mystery Motor??

Something else just occured to me, mainly because I have the same situation. What he my have, is a Johnson engine, with an ERude swivel bracket. I busted my swivel bracket on some junk out in "da bayou" last year and had to replace it with one off of an ERude, because I couldn't find anything else.

There's a reason why someone came up with the term, Johnnyrude!

Hmmmmmmmm .... Cadachevropontibuikolds?

No Both Numbers are off the ID plate on the frame. A Johnny Ser number and an Evinrude Mod Number? I was thinking it was some kind of comercial or something.
ID Plate says
Model 70443-M
Serial No J0001078

You guys are awsome! The Johnson hood I can understand. A hood is a hood. But why the J in the ser number?

Beats me - you shouldn't have an ERude Model Number combined with a Johnson Serial Number.

Heck, you ought to save the plate - you might have a collector's item!

Now you have me curious and I need to call my local BRP/OMC guy tomorrow, to see if he has ever run across one of these before. Its makes me wonder if OMC sometimes put powerheads that already had a Welch Plug with a Johnson number on it, on Evinrude motors.

That might be a logical assumption, since the powerheads would have been assembled separately and then put on the rest of the motors in assembly line fashion. I guess if they had an excess of powerheads of one "flavor" in a given production day, they could have used them on the other "flavor."

Re: Mystery Motor??

Update - it seems that there are Evinrudes with serial numbers that start with a "J."

As I mentioned before, I have a Johnson with an Evinrude transom/swivel bracket on it. Low and behold, the data plate on it has the ERude model that would be expected .... and it has a serial number starting with a "J."

If the paint of your motor looks original, I'd bet that you have the same situation that I do - a Johnson with an ERude bracket!
