Getting ready to restore some boat upholstery and want to use stainless steel staple instead of the regular steel ones. Anyone have a good source for the stainless steel type?

I bought mine at Lowes for about $11. I'm sure The Home Depot will also carry them.

The Home Despot near me carries both Stainless and Monel. I use whatever is cheapest.

Monel is more expensive but WILL last longer than stainless. If that's what you want.

Re: Stainless Steel Staple..Where to buy??

Just looking for something that won't leave the rust stains on the white gelcoat down the inside of the bow and side of stern. The bow upolstry pieces are kinda like a seat back but without the seat. More less there to look good and give a little padding in case someone falls. The stern seat pieces are a seatback with the seat being the lids to the baitwell and battery storage area. I will be sewing the piping myself and then wrapping around some 1/4'' of 1/2'' epoxyied plywood. The the whole piece get screwed in place and the staples will be on the back side more less against the gelcoat.

The so-called stainless steel staples at our HD say "NOT FOR MARINE USE".. Isn't the point of SS to not rust?

I have a tread started in the rebuild section on this project and I will be posting there from time to time as I make progress. But with nearly 6 months of winter up here in Wyoming I'm afraid the interior upolstry is all that will get done this winter.

By "marine use" I believe they are referring to saltwater exposure. The grade of stainless used is not high enough to resist long term exposure to a saltwater environment. Not much saltwater in Wyoming...

Re: Stainless Steel Staple..Where to buy??

there are all kinds of Stinaless steels, and few are PURE stainless.

316 is probably the best, but it is expensive, 304 is also good.

303 is ok, any of the carbon stainless steels you want to tay away from..400series especially.

416 is a very easy to cut( or machine) S/S, and i bet cheaper to make staples from than the tough S/S's

they paint 416 S/S when they ship it from the mill, ....because it rusts!! ha ha ha

id like to "hem" some canvas and I dont have the cash to take it to a canvas sewer, right now, and it is for a less than really important job...I was thinking to Staple the material, but I need a staple gun that can close the staple onto itself, like a desk top stapler

does anyone know of a staple gun that uses these marine SS staples that can close the staple onto itself??

thanks

Re: Stainless Steel Staple..Where to buy??

A hardware store that carries copper/brionze screens will have Monel staples to go with it. We use them on our screens where we have a high salt exposure. So I'd use them in a boat.

You could also prime them with rustoleum, staple, then hit again. IN your fresh water enviroment you shuold be OK

Our Home Depots down here in South Florida didn't seem to have the stainless but I was able to find both stainless and Monel at Ace Hardware.

Stainless staples will leave rust marks, just not as quick as steel. You NEED Monel. They are worth the expense unless your going to do it again in a year or two. I've been down that road before! I boat in Arizona, only fresh water, mine still rusted after the first season. Lowes and HD both carry them.
