So I just bought a boat a few months ago and have been doing stuff with the motor. The motor is a 1985 Force 85 H.P. engine. What is up with the two holes on the back of the engine? I know this engine does not have a telltale "yet, going to add this weekend" so what are up with these holes? It is below water exhaust correct? Also about the whole telltale thing... I read the big thread about adding it I was just wondering where I take the plug out to add it is that before or after the water has gone through the head? I do not want to take away water.

Thanks for the help!

Those two holes are the idle relief holes for the exhaust and cooling water when sitting still with the engine running. Once you get under way, the exhaust and water exits the lower end at the bottom exhaust port just above the propeller.

The plug at the top of the head that most people use for the tell tale is located in the water passage just before it enters the head. Don't use too big of a tube for your tell tale so it won't divert too much water. My personal preference is to use it for a water pressure gauge rather than a tell tale. You could use a "T" connector and have both if you wanted.

Hmm in that case sounds like I am going to go with a gauge instead. Thank you!
