Picked up a lightly used engine coupler but the unit is missing the collar that has the zerk fitting. Does anyone know anything pertaining to this situation. Im not seeing it sold and seems like it usually comes with the coupler .but of course not with mine. Im getting really tired of ebay. the coupler is for the 4 cylinder . thanks for any feedback

Re: Engine Coupler Question

Lightly used is a loose description, unless you personally know. I did not know an engine coupler even had a grease zerk.

Re: Engine Coupler Question

every picture of the coupler comes with this darn piece the picture is simply the coupler minus the collar that incorporates the zerk there is no science to it. Can i use it without the collar? If it is a different vintage i would think its fine to use just have to pull the outdrive to grease it. but it sure would be nice to have the same part. If this comes off snippy -i dont mean it im just a liitle ticked. please dont mind me.

it's my understanding that the newer ones have the zerk. for sure the old ones don't.
guess the way i feel about it is. with the zerk, it sure makes it easy to lub the coupler, but may motivate deferred maint. inspections due to the fact ya can lub the coupler w/o removing the drive. which should be done yearly best i understand to inspect the gimble brg, ujoints and in my case for my old drive w/o the zerk, lub the coupler.

Re: Engine Coupler Question

I got a good deal on it so if it the only difference is ease of greasing the spline ill go the old school way and pull the drive to grease. The splines look real good and thats the most important aspect.

Re: Engine Coupler Question

If I'm understanding the concept of a coupler, the splines can still look like new when the hub slips. It's probably fine if the seller is honest and knows what he
's selling. That coupler transferes all the engine's power to the driveshaft, it's got to be strong, I look at it like the clutch on a truck.

Hmmmm.....

Does your new (new/used) coupler have 6 holes that bolt to the flywheel's center? And, Does your old one have 3 holes that bolt to the edge of the flywheel?

I have a feeling you got an old style coupler for a new style engine. The new style engine uses flywheel bolts, not studs that the old style couple needs.

I think you might have one of those square peg in a round hole situations...

Ayuh,... Usually,.. The splines are well worn by the time the hub spins,...Especially in lower hp applications...
Bad transoms,+ other issues aside of course...
Again, Usually, a spun hub is Noticeable, even if cleaned up...

The key to spline Life is the width of the Top of each spline... New, I believe is about .100", flat tops...
Pointy splines are Junk...

As for what atomb's got, Who knows,... edit; Looks good from here...

That thing looks great. Zerk, or no Zerk, let 'er rip. Just get in the habit of pulling the drive every year (which you should do anyway) and greasing it up. My 470 doesn't have any room to access it, even if it had a zerk.

Re: Engine Coupler Question

The old coupler was destroyed by rust on the outside housing and the alignment was fine. When i pulle dthe ngine i felt this was a part that looked in terrible condition. My boat had been neglected by the PO. I have only had it for a few months and took it out less than 6 times before i had my blowby issue. Im replacing all the parts that look like they have seen better days.
