Anybody use one?

If so, is the viewing magnification useful, instead of carrying binoculars? I'm not the best at judging visual range anymore, plus it's tough to make out images at at distance.

Re: Laser Rangefinder

I can not say particularly which one is better that another, but the magnification is nice. But then again I like prairie doggin. The more glass , the better.

One of the guys that was teaching me the ropes deer hunting this year was using a real nice Nikon 550 rangefinder (6x, I think) and I played with it a bit. Seemed pretty good at picking up things in the real world.Wonder how its elevation compensation capabilities would mate with the BDC equipped scopes?

I am a member of a few hunting forums and the leica seems to be the clear favorite but at about $600 they are not cheap. I have a Bushnell scout and it works well but they don't pick up the animal after about 350 yds. you have to range trees or something else at those distances. With the leica you can range the animal out to about 600 yrds. The magnification is not enough to spot with but all my rifles have a minimum 9X so i use the scope or glasses for spotting.

While the magnification is useful, I still carry good binoculars.

I am very fortunate to have a pair of Nikon Monarchs under the xmas tree, but just for fun, stopped at Cabelas and looked at the range finders. The range finding is pretty cool, but using the viewfinder as a "monocular", is nothing special.

Looks like I'll be glassing more and learning to judge range the old fashioned way. (trial and error) ;)

Thanks everyone.

The magnification can be helpful but you should not depend on it. If you are glassing a lot you will get your eyes tires, you need binoculars. In a pinch, it can be the only thing you can use. But I would not go spotting with one.

My bushnell has 8x mag but I still carry 12x50 binoculars. I do not find the rangefinder effective for that use.
