better gas mileage on a 1958 35hp johnson:eek:

is trolling at idle speed best of all?

also i looked at the motor when the boat is planning. is it alright for the exhuast relief to have no water coming out of it when the boat is planned good? the motor overheat. does most of the water at this point go out the bottom?

Re: to much gas!

it should show water at the exhaust relief. a lot of the water exits under water, but not all of it.

I think in distance per gallon all speeds are pretty much even (ish) at least it is with my motor. Trolling for a few miles seems to use about the same amount as cruising at around 35 MPH and around 4,000 rpm.

Especially on a 140, trolling ain't cheap, like my 90, trolling ain't cheap. I'm rigging an OMC aux tilt mount with my 9.9 for this exact reason, economy.

We use our little Minn Kota now that the children got me for my birthday this year. Great little unit.

Nice, I had one on my Bass boat and they work well, I lost the 90 twice last year - once to a gas gauge that read 1/4 when empty and a ground on a powerpack, I vowed to install a kicker for next year, getting a tow with the Johnson on the back of my boat is sacrilege, that's a Merc's job.

Without a doubt it is a job for a merc !!!!
I always have a 5 gallon can under the bow just in case with the gas gauge. Mine reads full for a heck of a long time and then when it starts to drop it is at half in around 3 gallons. I also have a 7.5 merc that I inherited in 2 cardboard boxes. It is now rebuilt and will be fired up in the spring (hopefully) then it will be stored under the bow while the Minn Kota hangs on the back.

Re: to much gas!

I will burn the same amount in a given distance.
For example.
If I burn 2 gallons in 10 miles at plane, I will burn 2 gallons getting there trolling as well.
Im burning less fuel per minute at a troll but getting there much faster on plane( but using fuel faster as well).

That's what I find. Yours may well be different though but I doubt it.

Re: to much gas!

Every 2-stroke fuel consumption chart I've seen has shown that maximum fuel economy (MPG) is at idle or trolling speeds.

Fuel economy drops dramatically as the engine RPMs increase and there is a optimal range for best fuel economy at cruising speeds. Usually seems to be around 3000 - 3800 RPM. The optimal speed and RPM will vary depending on your hull design and your specific motor. (Among other factors)

Most of the main brands have some sort of fuel economy and performance charts available on their web sites. I've seen situations where you can have 18mpg at 1000RPM and 3MPG at 4000RPM. (I think that was an ETEC test I read on BRPs site)

Your motor being a 1958 will have very poor fuel economy compared to the newer designs i.e (loop charged, DFI and 4-strokes will all have better fuel economy than yours).

You can find out for yourself exactly how much fuel you are using and where your optimal cruise speed is for fuel economy. Install a fuel flow meter on your fuel line and record the GPH consumption a intervals of 500RPM while recording the speed on GPS.

MPG = MPH / GPH. So if you are burning 3GPH at 3500RPM and moving at 25MPH you are getting 8.3MPG.

Re: to much gas!

yes thats why i was asking whether idling speed gives the most range? i believe i got 2-3 mpg at 5/8-3/4 speed some full throttle. its probably more like 1-2 miles a gallons since i trolled the remainder mile home out of 6-7 mile trip.

man my pontoon boat with a 10hp gets better mpg except its to slow and i got really no where with it lol

Re: to much gas!

Although I've never verified gas mileage, seems like I can troll all day with my 1957 Lark, but when I open it up it seems to really suck the gas. Something to check out next summer.

Re: to much gas!

If i run my 175 Johnny hard all day i can kill a full tank of gas. 90 gallons!

I think all the older 2-strokes never considered fuel economy.
BUT,They are fun to nail the throttle...:D
