Upgrading from 28 to 48 motor.....

We have a 24' pontoon boat with a 28hp Johnson motor on it currently. We are wanting to upgrade the motor. I have found a 48hp Evinrude. Would I see much of an improvement with 20 more horsepower?

Thanks,

Gary

Certainly! It is nearly double the HP. Pontoons are not speedsters by any means but performance will improve significantly.

Trying! LOL

The 48 is a 1988 and my 28 is a 1995 so Im trying to work out some sort of trade. According to NADA my 28 is worth twice his 48, but then thats not real world!

Ok, heres what he offered me: he is asking $999 for the 48. He said he would give me $500 for my 28 and free swap-out of the motors. (Im hoping the controls are interchangeable.)

Good deal?

Not really a good deal in my opinion. I guess the 48 is in great running shape? If so, then $999 is a decent price but yours should be worth a lot more than 500. Just buy that 48 and sell yours on craigslist for $999.

Also if you are paying cash for the 48 get him to do the install for you for free. Money talks!

Yeah $500 for your 95 28 is a raw deal. Very raw.

While a pontoon could allways use a little more power your speed difference will depend on how well the 28 is setup. A 24footer with a 48 might do 18-21 mph
on a good day. Your 28 I'll bet is around 12-15.Keep in mind at WOT (wide open throttle) the 48 will use about 2 more gallons per hour(GPH) 2.8 GPH (28),4.8 GPH (48)
One plus is the 48 run at the 28s speed will be loafing where the 28 would be busting a gut.I believe your motor needs to be a long shaft. Both motors need to be propped for at least 5,000 rpm.

Thanks for the replies.

You're pretty close, I get about 10 out of the 28 with 4 adults aboard.

Ensure the 48 is a long shaft with a larger prop designed for pontoons.

Thanks. Hadn't thought to check on shaft length. I don't think it has a prop so I'll be able to get what I need.
