I currently have a Johnson 28SPL and am looking to upgrade to an Evinrude 48SPL.

I was wondering what the SPL stands for (was thinking Special) and does it indicate anything special with those motors?

Also, is there anything I need to be concerned about on a 1988 Evinrude 48SPL? I know about checking compression, etc.

Not that I'm aware of. Great motors as far as I know.

They are no frill's engine's meant for hard use such as fishing, or work boats.

I understand that these motors are exactly the same as the higher horsepower counter parts which the except that they did not have a few options (like oil injection). So a 28 SPL was the same as the 30hp and the 48SPL is the same as the 50HP. Some might say that the SPL motors are better because they have those fewer options which had a tendency to cause repair issues.

Thanks for the replies!

1 more question: will the controls for my 1995 Johnson 28SPL interchange with the controls for a 1988 Evinrude 48SPL? If so, that makes the swap a whole lot easier!
