Depends on where it is "stuck". Is it a motor that has been in use right along with no previous problem? If the answer is "yes", then retard the throttle to "slow" position. There is an interlock that prevents shifting at high throttle settings.

However, if it is siezed from corrosion or long storage, then you will have to identify where it is siezed and act accordingly.

Hi F R,
I just bought the boat last week and noticed that the gear shifter is stuck and cannot be moved to neutral position, thus the prop is stuck as well. Any ideas? where I should start.
Thanks

What do you mean the prop is stuck? Are you saying it won't rotate at all? Even if in gear, it should rotate back and forth over 1/4 turn. If it won't do that, then you have junk on your hands. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

If it does rotate back and forth, read my previous reply. You will have to try to wiggle each part till you identify which is stuck. Did you notice the comment about retarding the throttle?

Remove the cable connection on the motor end, wiggle the lever and observe the linkage you should have a grease zerk in the area of the lever, there is a linkage and belcrank before before attaching to shift rod itself, you can remove the access cover on port side, disconnect the linkage from shift rod itself and go from there.

Thanks F R,
Unfortunitly it does not rotate back and forth, not even a 1/4 turn. You've mentioned that I have junk on my hands. So is there any thing that I can to to fix it?

Have you checked the gear oil? Chances are, you will find it full of rusty water instead of oil. If that is the case, well like I said.....

However, if it is not full of water, the only way to be 100% sure of the problem is to tear it apart and examine it.

Mmmmmmmmm rusty water.....the best thing there is to spoil a boater's day. I bought a motor like this once and yes, it did end up being junk, from the powerhead gasket, down. It was a 1968 Evinrude 40hp. The guy let it sit for years while the lower unit was completely rusty inside. Luckily, I was able to use the powerhead on a 1959 35hp and made it an awesome motor.:D

On the other hand, your lower unit could be burnt up/siezed up from lack of oil and that is almost as ugly of a scenario. That motor will have the same lower unit as several other models in those years too. If it has a split gearcase, then it's the type I. If it doesn't have the split gearcase, then it's the type II. If you let us know, then we can let you know what other lower units are compatable with your motor.

Before you go through the expense of replacing, or rebuilding the lower unit, I would check over the power head and see if it is in good enough condition, to make it worth the time and expense. Make sure the compression is good on all 4 and see what condition the carbs and ignition system are in.

Re: 1966 Evinrude 60 hp shifter stuck

Thank you all for all the advice so far.
I checked the power head and it seems fine, so I started and disassembled the lower unit. I noticed that the lower unit did not have any oil and was completely seized. Here is a picture of my lower gear-case assembly .

I have found a lower unit on ebay which is for year (60-65) JOHNSON EVINRUDE 75HP (see below picture).
eBayISAPI.dll

Do you know if this will fit my 1966 Evinrude 60hp model 60653R?

I don't see any pictures, but the 60 and 75hp take the same gearcases--as long as the 75 isn't an electric shift. That's a whole different animal.

I have a non-factory service manual scanned and saved that covers your motor. If you would like a free copy, send me a Private Message with your email address and I will reply with it attached. Good luck!
