I have cut out most of the rotten deck areas and found some troubling issues. I have found that there was no bulkhead to support the deck between the driver and passenger seatmounts. It looked as if the manufacturers relied on the foam to support some of the deck between the stringers. That may have worked but there was a large gap between the four "foam balls".

I also found about an inch of water was in the bottom of the hull and did not have a drain hole between the rear bulkhead and the bilge. There was also water that was trapped under the driver seat area, it was basically blocked by the stringer from getting to the bottom of the hull.

My plan is to replace the stringers and the lower deck behind the casting deck. The stringers have some dark spots especially on the port stringer. The starboard stringer has some cracking. The advice I have gotten (father & friend) is to reinforce the existing stringers with additional wood. My thoughts are why go through so much trouble and chance it?

We joke with each other and say that my boat was built on a Friday at the plant. Ha ha ;)

What are your thoughts?

Let the spending of money begin!

Water sitting around and the look of that wood crumbling is certainly not a good sign. Reinforcing rotten wood is useless.

Question - how are you going to replace the full length of the stringers without removing/replacing the casting deck as well? Are the rear section of stringers seperated by a head at the casting deck?

Good luck!

Regards,

James

That is my current delima. The existing stringers run up adjacent to the live well, about 2 feet under the casting deck. I was hoping to slide them underneath somehow, but it looks like I may have to go to plan B. I did notice that the casting deck has no water protection other than the glass on top. So replacing it seems like the way to go.

Got any ideas on what I should do with the console? It is glassed into the starboard gunnel.

I have more pics on the "tools for wetting" thread. Sorry moderators. I can title the above thread with this one if need-be. Thank you

I wouldnt count on being able to slide the stringer out from underneath the floor. Plus, if you are going to the length of gutting the stringers and rear deck, you might as well gut the casting deck as well. Gives you more options for redesign, plus the sense of knowing you are not piecing good into bad.

The console being glassed into the side of the gunnel looks like a pain in the a*s. I would just cut it away from the gunnel and tab it back in later. Otherwise, if you leave it attached to the gunnel, you will have to unscrew/cut the bottom of the console from the floor and lift the cap off/up on that side to get the console out of the way of your stringer work.

Regards,

James

By the way, where in North Carolina are you at?

Thanks for the info James. I am at Blount's Creek off the Pamlico River/Sound. I notice your in CB, I love that area. It's like the Rodanthe of Southern NC!

Here's what I've done so far. I popped the console up off the deck and started making progress at removing rotten stringers. What a job! Even the better looking parts of the stringers were soaked. I guess I picked a good time to tackle this project.

My plan is to convert this into a bass/bay run-a-bout with a non-skid deck. This is alot of work, but very rewarding and I think it will pay off for years in the future.

I need some advice on my hatch doors. I think they are aluminum, should I try and glass them somehow before gelcoating, or try to cut some wood hatches? I'm not sure if I can can get a good bond with the metal.

Thank you

Finally feeling like I'm making some progress after grinding & grinding. Got the stringers cut and will coat them in resin soon, after the temps warm up a little. Thank you to everyone for educating me, I couldn't do this without this great resource. Feeling good about 2010!!!
