My cables have been stiff for the year i've had the boat. Finally last night the housing the steering shaft goes in broke and 4 teeth off of 1 of the cables. The orgional set up is a duel cable system which is $400 (this is way out of my price range). The single cable system is a fraction of the price, can I use just a single cable system? 1991 johnson gt 150 on 1990 cajun bass boat.

It depends on what dual cable system you have on the boat. If you have the older Merc Ride-Guide system, it has been discontinued and no parts are available from the factory anymore. If you have Teleflex cables, you may be able to replace the one bad cable only. There should be a model/part number stamped on the cable about 1-2 feet from the engine end of the cable. Pull the old cable out and check it. Most boat dealers handle replacement Teleflex cables. A single cable is usually around $175-$190. Many (bass) boat manufacturers went to the dual cable steering on 150 hp engines and higher for control/safety issues.

Here is a dual cable and helm system by pretech that will replace everything you have now, just make sure you use the washers supplied in kit and love the price!!!($179) I have sold and installed several helm systems and have had no problems with them.

I think im going to purchase a single cable system like a teleflex kit #ss137
this looks like it will do. Is there a real safety concern with a single cable on a 150?
