I picked up a used OD for the lower unit.

Removed anode bolt, 2nd bolt under anode..
Backed off the nut fwd by the shift foot..Didn't remove
Backed off the 2 side nuts..
Now the lower should drop, being held on barely by the fwd nut..

Nope..It really looks like the PO used some type of RV gasket sealer or something..GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Any ideas on seperating the upper/lower?
A bit gunshy on using a screwdriver to split them, thinking I may damage the casings..

Anybody gone through this type of PO madness??

Should be 2 more nuts to remove, look up uder the drive forward of where the anode was. 5 nuts total. Plus the bolt under the anode.

i wouldn't pry with a screwdriver, your only going to damage the caseing. You can try a combination of thin metal putty knives and some thin piano wire to cut through the rtv.

Sometimes they are hard to remove even without RTV. DON'T USE RTV.
When i have a sticky one i leave the front nut on, and the rear (under annode) bolt or nut on (but very lose) and beat the hell out of the lower unit using a dead blow hammer. Hitting downward on the torpedo alternating sides.
There are most likely dowels (depending on the drive) that locate the upper and lower units. They can get sticky.
Was there a lot of white stuff under the nuts and bolt heads? That is corrosion. Use penetrating oil where studs go between the two peices. I mean soak it and give it time to work. Inspect this thing carefully when you get it apart. Was there water inside the outdrive?

Owners shouldn't be working on their boats anyway; that said, i have seen shops work that make the owners work look like they were factory trained. 'nutcase

rather oxymoronic isnt it?

What about if you want something done right, yada yada yada...

Why take my boat to a shop and pay for them to screw it up when I am PERFECTLY capable of messing it up myself..for free! lol

I'm assuming this includes Mercruiser mechanics that happen to own a boat with Mercruiser power packages.

And I guess iboats should shut down their entire replacement parts section?
Maybe except for seats, bumpers and dock lines...
Any of us monkeys can handle that job!

I'm glad you got it off, but for future reference, here is something that has worked for me....

In the picture Don posted, the two nuts labeled "d" - if you put something flat above them, then simply screw them off with an open end wrench, they will push against the flat and push the bottom off.

(Making sure all the other nuts are off as well of course! :) )

Re: PO used gasket sealer on OD's up/lower

many times I have used the side nuts as jack screws, works on the swedish drive volvo uppers as well.
gotta love saltwater and no maint.
its also why I go through so much oxygen and acetylyne.
one of my coworkers hates home mechanics and backyadigans.
I love them.
I am confident there is nothing they can screw up that, with copious amounts of cash, I cannot fix :).
last august I had a customer bring in an SX drive, water had been in the bellows.
I replaced the shaft assy and input yoke seal and sold him a gimbal bearing and a bellows.
2 weeks ago he brought the rig in complaining of drive noise and rattling ujoints.
said I did something wrong.
upon inspection I found the hose clamp bonding clip on the fwd end of the drive bellows was installed between the aluminium and the bellows not the bellows and clamp.
means this bellows had been leaking saltwater for at least 3 months, boat stays in water full time.
I smiled and waved as I installed another gimbal bearing, drive bellows and shaft assy :) ment yet another 4 hours profit for me :).
I dont mind selling the parts and giving installation advice, just when you mess it up dont blame the seller blame the installer.

Now I have a new word: "backyadigans" :)

I guess that's me! ;)

I appreciate those techs who are willing to sell the parts and give some installation advice - they are the ones I gladly support when those times come up that I need someone else to do the work. Even on those occasions when I cause more problems than I solve. ;)
