I have a 61 10 hp that will not run smooth even after new gas, new plugs and I have checked the points. the motor never stalls it just runs like it has a lot of water in the fuel. Also when I bought it the marine supplier told me I did not need a pressurized fuel tank. Is this accurate.I would really appreciate any input I can get.

If the fuel fitting on the motor has two hoses connected to it from the engine, you need a 2-line tank. J/E switched to fuel pumps right around that year, so I'm not sure on your model. Check compression, and check spark w/a tester. Top secret files at the beginning of this forum will help too. Whenever I work on one, first thing is compression, then proper spark. Don't bother with the fuel side of things until you've confirmed them. Intermittent spark has sold millions of carb kits and fuel pumps! Good luck, and keep asking away.. there are folks on here that are genuine experts, and generous w/their knowledge! Their sage advice has helped me many times..

If its a dirty carb playing the choke a bit might have some beneficial effect.

If it does then go for a carb clean after checking the compression and sparks and also inspecting the coils. If they are cracked or manky looking replace them.

If its working at all with a single line tank then its not a dual line motor!

The '61 QD was never a dual line system. They have a fuel pump. The 60's did also I believe, the '59 was the last year of the pressure tank for the QD I'm pretty sure. I'd have to go check the shed to be sure though.

Edit: I just looked at the original flyer and the '60 QD did not have a pressure tank. It says that none of the engines in '60 had one according to the flyer.

Again, thanks for the info. I am going to replace the fuel line and check the compression on it tomorrow. I have been reading the top secret files and if the compression test works out I am going to clean the carb again. I will post my results and thanks again.

Is it sneezing (runs smooth for awhile then hesitates, sneezes, then runs again.
This is refered to as a lean sneeze. You may be able solve it by adjusting the low speed mixture.

I would remove the drain plug on the bottom of the carb and drain it, anyway, eventhough it has been rebuilt. Water can sneak in there at any time and so can particals that love to plug up jets.
