25HP Montgomery Ward no spark

I have recently purchased a boat with a Montgomery Ward 25HP outboard and I'm trying to find out why it has no spark. Cleaned contact points and pulled over with rope and no battery. Model #VWB 52025 SER #47x 20351. Was wondering what year it might be and when obtaining parts which brand to ask for. Thank you.

You say no battery??? Are there cables?Does it require a key?Any info would help.J

74 Chrysler.Motors with an alternator have a battery ignition.All others have magneto ign. Battery ignition have 2 external coils.Without a battery there won't be spark.Does it have electric start? Magneto ign. may have a kill switch.When you replaced the flywheel did you clean the bore and taper and torque the nut to 540 in lbs.

There are cables, it has a key, I am going to purchase a battery and try it, it has an electric starter, thank you for responding.

I do not know what year it is, no alternator, it has an electric starter (have not tried with battery yet), it has Magneto ign, coils are under flywheel, did not clean the bore and taper on flywheel and just tightened nut, I will clean and torque, thank you for responding.

Got motor running, it dies after taking off in about 30 seconds. Seems to burn way too much gas. Smokes real bad and used two gallons in a very short time. Did install carb kit an cleaned. Seems to run ok at idle and will rev up in neutral. Any suggestions? Thank you.

#1, don't be revving it up in neutral unless you want to be picking up the pieces.
#2. a guess would be a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm.

Yup sounds like a fuelpump diaphram.

I have a new problem, the motor will not come out of forward. Do you know if the lower end needs to come off to remedy?
