1988 Evinrude 48 spl hydraulic assist?

Hello again,

I was just wondering if OMC even made a hydraulic assist for this outboard like what's on my 1992 40hp Johnson. It's my understanding that the 48spl was sort of a stripped down motor compared to the VRO's, and I wasn't sure if they even offered it on this model. After a day of examination, I don't believe there is any way on earth to use my Johnson hydraulic assist (boy that sounds funny ) :D on the 88 Rude, and I can't help but think this motor would be a beast to try to raise in the water without either power tilt or hydraulic assist. Any help is extremely appreciated!

Thanks again

The tilt assist kit for the 1988 48HP was part number 172833.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 48 spl hydraulic assist?

I've been researching this part number and have emailed a couple of the salvage yards listed. Just to be clear, though, is this part number for a power tilt with an electric motor, or a hydraulic assist with just an actuator. If I had my 'druthers, I'd prefer just the actuator like my 1992.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 48 spl hydraulic assist?

I'm having a good deal of trouble locating this unit. I've been quoted $1100 by one marina. I don't think that could be the right part, and frankly, I'd rather get a hernia than shell that much out. My OMC manual does not show this part at all....does anyone on here have a picture they could post of a similar setup on their motor so I may have a better chance to find the part on another outboard? There are tons of this setup on Ebay, but all for 1989 and newer. It would be a big help for me to at least see what I'm looking for.

Thanks a lot

Go to www.shopevinrude.com. Click on your year and hp, click on OB Acessories, go to power trim and tilt then to power tilt you will see the diagram of the unit you want.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 48 spl hydraulic assist?

hydraulic assist is not part#172833!!

that part number is a POWER TILT KIT add on accessory..

I have one and need to rebuild it..
I also had a 50 HP with the Hydraulic ASSIST feature...

it has no power...it just takes some of the weight of the motor onto a hudraulic ram...so you only lift a poertion of the motors weight

The hydraulic ASSIST option is a neat feature...because you can lock it were ever you want....

but it isnt as convienent as POWER TILT...and if your motor didnt come with POWER TNT you could buy the Power tilt kit and bolt is onto your manual motor , run the wires up to the control area and have finger tip power tilt!!!

a casting bolts to the motor and a casting bolts to the stern bracket.. and a electrical-hydraulic unit drives the two.

Ill look up some of those boat yards myself

I believe that you are speaking of a system that did not exist in 1988.

#172833 did exist and is what was available for that motor at the time.

1990 Model E48ESLESA has a hydraulic cylinder, part # 434037 which was part of what was named Touch Trim in the 1990 factory service manual page 5-20 and 5-21. Picture here: http://www.dixiemarinesales.com/images/434037lrg.jpg

434037 is used all the way through 2005, so the system parts should be widely available.

The Touch Trim system is shown on the exhaust housing diagram for 1990 E48ESLESA

I don't know that it will fit the 1988 motor.

exactly...he was looking for the system he had on his 92 which was hydraulic ASSIST..non electric-non power like this:

and the accessory tilt they offered through 1988 looked like this:
29vbf3l.png

and they are not the same. I have motors with each...

and since i am currently trying to fix the accessory item and I searched yahoo for any info and this thread came up!! ha ha, I figured id chime in...

I hadnt checked to see how far back the assist cylinder was offered..

for his 1988 model 48 special , he may be relagated to trying to find part #172833, if he wants any help lifting the motor...but it wont be like his 92!

I wonder if the assist cylinder doesnt just bolt into the same spot as the Hydraulic TNT units of the same years!!

Re: 1988 Evinrude 48 spl hydraulic assist?

I have the hydraulic assist on my 91 evinrude 48 SPL. It is a neat feature if it is working correctly. I just had to replace the cable to the hydraulic ram due to the connections are plastic and break under heavy loads
