Does the boat have a horsepower rating plate on it?

If it's the standard Alumacraft of the era of the 33 then, with remote steering it is a winner. Friend of mine had one with a Johnny (green and white) and it makes for a sweet rig. Nice performance, good and stable, easy to handle. Most of those 14 footers had a 15" transom, so make sure the engine is built for a 15 also. Easy to tell. On a 15" lower unit there is only one bulge in the midsection housing above the antiventilation plate (horizontal plate just above the prop) allowing room for the water pump. On the 20" they put in a 5" extension which separates the bulge into top and bottom halves and the extension (with bulge halves to match) joins them making 2 bulges.

If you have to use that motor go ahead and mount it. Would suggest you put a restriction on the throttle to limit WOT. Keep yourself and anyone else on board out of trouble. When you overpower, things can go bad real fast, and you can overreact especially if you have had a few brews. Of course, am certain no one here on iboats operates if they have swilled a few. FRED

I have a '67 33hp Johnson on my lund, but it is rated for 35hp. it is 65 inches at the widest point and the transom is double braced. It's also deep being at 23 inches at the lowest point on the sheer line. Also, the boat is over 250lbs without my modifications.

Your boat is narrower by over a foot and likely shallower. I'd bet that it's pretty light as well. I wouldn't put a 33hp on unless it is a runabout and has a remote steering setup.

saw your boat on another thread, and I wouldn't recommend it. reading your other threads, the 18hp that was available might be a better fit. I'm sure you'd get in the mid twenties with a light load with that boat and an 18hp (500-600lbs total displacement which includes motor, gear, boat, fuel, and accessories).

Post some pictures of your Alumacraft 14 ft boat.Alumacraft made many different 14 ft Series boats.I once had a TS 14 Alumacraft that was only rated for 20 HP.I currently own an Alumacraft FD 14 boat that's rated at 40 HP.It has the reinforced Transom.

Is the boat the same boat on your other thread on the '69 sears boat restore? If it is, I can't absolutely tell by the pics, but the transom does not seem like it's made for more than a 15hp. I've seen pics of FD's and their transoms are very well reinforced which may account for a higher hp rating.

yea thats it, the pics dont make the boat look right...the transom is plenty sturdy. even if it isnt, i could always reinforce it. btw are u talking about thw wood or aluminum?

Davey-
I was just looking through your thread in the restoration section-I noticed you said that you had a 7hp ted williams on it and you said "it can take a 15". Were you meaning that 15 is the max hp rating or:confused: cause if it is-putting a 33 could be a BIG mistake:eek:

Ok well I thought you meant that 15hp was the max hp rating...even though the construction looks the same, it could still have a diff hp rating...if you know a boat mechanic he might be able to help you with the max hp rating...i just dont want you overpowering your boat...i dunno what to say.....
