Anyone recommend a good engine forum (Chevy) that I can go 'lurk' on?

I have a good basic understanding of motors, but would like read and view pics on a variety of problem solving issues.

I hear ya, I read it avidly. Actually my question is because of this thread...http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=367962

I get the parts and pieces, but what the heck is a 'cam gear'...I know now, because I googled it, but I was thinking where I could hang out where all they talk about is motors?

Guys on the forum talk about various parts like second nature. I have to back up and understand what these parts 'do'. I could fill that thread with "how does that work?"

So are you looking for concepts or specifics? As in , how a basic engine works/ breaks or something about V6 GM block XXLiter, serial #XXXXXXXX, ?

Not that I am a mechanic by trade or anything, but you might want to pick up a book on the basics, start with the briggs and stratton rebuild book, walks you through the basics and has great illustrations, and work yourself up. Just make sure its got good pictures.:)
by the way if my memorys still working after all that eggnog, the little gear on the cam drive the distribuitor and oil pump, the big gear is what connects the cam to the crankshaft, this is how the valves move and everything is kept in time.

How an engine works

This is OK for a description of a throttled four stroke (Otto cycle) engines.

My favorite is "The Engine Book" by Caterpillar. I just found one on EBay and I am thinking of buying it. It explains the four stroke cycle very well and the inherent differences between diesel and Otto engines. I believe there is a two cycle reference as well. I read this in 1978 and I can trace almost all of my fundamental understanding of engines to this little cartoon book. You mentioned Cam Gear and that type of basic system explanation is made very clear.

Good Question: sort of both. I've read Don S's stickies and the other Adults Only contributions...great. Sometimes I'd like to see the diagram pointed out where it is on the motor.

Something as common as 'set timing' is mentioned and assumed you can do in your sleep. (I had to youtube it) I get the basics of the ignition system and firing order and distributer, but I don't know how to set the timing. Did it in shop class....hmmm, 20 some years ago, I remember the gun and what I was looking for, but I couldn't do it today.

It's sort of like teaching a jr high class how to frame a house. They may have a great understanding of framing, but given a pile of lumber and tools is another level of understanding of wood and problem solving.

So, instead of asking one question after another I was thinking of lurking somewhere where they just talk chevy motors.

My bro-in-law has taught heavy duty mechanics for the last 30 years...he's also a pack rat....I'll check and see if he has some of these in some dusty corner.

Go out and get yourself the Book "How to Hot Rod a Small Block Chevy" or pick up anything that was written by Bill "Grumpy Jenkins". I still have mine from the 70's when I was 1st learning and gave me a very good foundation
