Lost title on a boat from another state

We are considering buying a boat from Wisconsin. The big issue is that the seller doesn't have a title for the boat or the trailer. Now I know that boats shorter than 16 feet don't need titles up there, but, the actual lengh of this one is 16.5 feet. So I don't know where it lands in the eyes of the Wi. DNR. I don't know what the Wi. laws are about trailers. Heck I don't even know if they need to be tagged? Some states don't tag trailers.

I guess what I'm asking is, if Wi. would require this boat to be titled, do I have to title it in Wi. before I bring it to Illinois?

How much red tape am I looking at?? The seller is willing to write me a bill of sale and if I can't get it titled, he will refund my purchase price.

I have read through some of the past threads here and none of what I've found adresses this particular issue. If this becomes too difficult we'll just walk away. I haven't physically looked at the boat and I currently don't have the HIN, but when I do, I will run a check here on iboats for it's history.

ANY help or info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Has the boat or trailer ever been registered by anyone? If it has I would think it would be as easy as a search at the DMV to get a new pink slip, and if not would not a bill of sale from the origanal owner/present owner suffice?

besure, contact the state it came from, about their law. if so seller will have to get a duplicate clear title. it could be a lender is still holding the title.

Ayuh,... You should be asking the State of Illinois these questions....
They're the 1s that wrote the rules,+ if They're not satisfied,... You won't be either....;)

I'm gonna call the Illinois DNR to see what the requirements are. I just thought maybe I could get some direction from here.

Not a big problem at all...

Just contact (call!)WI DNR for a replacement title application, have the WI hull ID handy for reference. If that boat had a title, they will know right away and so will you. Then an application for replacement title will have to be sent in by current owner with 5 bucks.

Current owner will get title replacement, sign and give to you along with the little plastic registration card that stays on the boat at all times.

Then register in IL as you please.

NO title for trailer required. No plates either. Just bill of sale. If it has VIN on it, make sure that is noted on bill of sale.

I live in Il my trailer came from Wi without a title. I registered it as home built, it's very easy to do.

If the seller wants to sell it, get him to get proper WI documentation before you buy it.

Wisconsin doesn't title or license trailers that are under 3000# gross weight.

Wisconsin only recently (10 years or so) started titling boats of this size.

If the current owner has owned it longer than the titling law has been in effect, he may not have a title for it, but he could apply for and get a title for it. I have done this.

Also, if he has not kept the registration up to date, this can be an issue.

I suspect that not having a title for the boat, will make it a real pain to deal with the IL requirements.

I would have the current owner get a title for the boat in WI, than sell it to you.

You will need the title and the registration card.

Re: Lost title on a boat from another state

Talked with him last night. Come to find out he has owned the boat for less than a year. He traded a car for it. He never got any title because the previous owner never had a title. So, I'm wondering if it's gonna be an issue at all?? He has a bill of sale, and he will write out a bill of sale to me.
The IDNR will require me to fill out a pile of paperwork, I'm sure.

All I need to do now is get info on the 1966 evinrude 80 horse electricshift(mod # 80693C) hanging on the back. Are these good reliable outboards?
Then I can make a better informed decision on weather to buy it or not.

Well they quit making them for a reason... and parts can be an issue and can be expensive. I have seen a flurry of parts for them on ebay lately but again you're buying very old "used" parts even then.

I wouldn't have one but as usual someone will come along and tell you how wonderful theirs is.....LOL

Before you buy that boat you better find out what all your state is going to need in order to get it free and clear in your name.
It could be a real nightmare and it could be why the current owner has not registered it in his name.
It could also be stolen.

Re: Lost title on a boat from another state

Worst case scenario is that you go to one of the online title services and get a new title for it. I went through the same thing dealing with a never titled boat from out of state here. The original owner never had a title, it wasn't required in their state. The original owner in my case had died, I got the boat from a relative of his with a bill of sale. NJ has a big run around to get a title under such circumstances so I went to ITS online, http://www.its-titles.com/. It cost me a few bucks but the boat was worth it and it saved me a lot of leg work. I now have a proper title for the boat.

Some states are easier than others to get a title from, it may also be easier for you or the current owner to get a valid title in WI?
