when i bought the boat somebody had a hi-lex throttle and gear shifter in the boat with just the cables hooked up it was laying on the floor it has no cover so when i pulled the shifter out so i could rev the boat up it would not go ahead very far and then i noticed it has its own neutral safety switch on it were the 50 force has a separate one on the motor and the throttle linkage hits the tab for the gear shifter the sifter is one handle would i have to cut the tab off the lever on the motor and take the neutral safety switch wires off the one on the motor and hook them to the one on the shifter i really didn't want to use that shifter because i dont have a cover so there is no way to fasten it to the boat unless i find a cover or try to make one. a friend gave me a old morse shifter in nice shape for its age same cable hook up as the hi-lex so i hooked it up shifts nice the only problem is i have the same problem as the other shifter but with the morse it has a pull out tab so you can pull the tab so it wont go into gear so you can rev it up but it hits the tab on the motor lever too any way around it with out cutting the lever on the motor plus the morse does not have a safety neutral switch the morse is a single handle to any help would be appreciated thanks forty6goingon65

Re: 50 force throttle and gear linkage

IF I UNDERSTAND: The Morse control has a pull out lever or button which allows you to fast idle and warm-up the engine without shifting. The control box and the linkage inside the engine LIMIT the control handle travel and this RPM in neutral to about 1500 RPM. It only needs to crack open the carb butterfly and advance the timing a couple of degrees to do this. It does not look like a lot of play and indeed there should not be much. This is correct. You should NOT be able to advance the throttle all the way in neutral. DO NOT cut off the tab on the control linkage tower.

that's correct frank i started the motor with the morse shifter and adjusted the screw on the tab and got enough rev that way but when i put the shifter back so i can push the tab in to put it in gear the butter fly closes all the way and the motor stalls out do i adjust the linkage at the carb to get it to idle thanks forty5 going 65 oh another thing when i bought the boat the key switch was in rough shape the tab for the battery wire broke off so i put in another key switch it was off another boat but it did not have the push in for the choke so i put in a toggle switch for the choke the toggle switch was the kind you had to switch on and off i said to my wife i should change it to a push button one so that way i would not forget to shut the toggle off well i had the push button one on my work bench and was getting ready to put it in the boat when my phone rang i was talking on the phone when i had noticed smoke coming from the choke well i forgot i had the power on and i burnt out the choke go figure
