Welcome to iboats! You will not find a better place for great info. Take a look at some of the threads that have five stars next to them and you will fond some really good info.

You have a nice looking boat there, and it sounds like you will need a deck if you have soft spots.

Just a tip, use photobucket for you pictures. People hate having to click to see pictures, and with photobucket you can post them right here. I think the accepted size is 640X480.

Nice boat. What exactly do you want to do with it? Full restore? Have you checked for rot?

That boat looks nice! Doesn't seem like it will be too much work. Welcome to iboats by the way! I am doing a big resto right now that I would have never been able to do without this place.

Best of luck

I know that thread all to well, that was also my inspiration. That boat turned out real nice. I do not know what happened to him though. The 187 is a nice looking boat and I think that Chaparral did a good job with the hull. Good luck with it and here is another to check out as well as mine

well the problem im running into is the floor didnt come up when i removed the carpet, kinda expected it but i was surprised it didnt. i do have a few "weak" spots along with a few high spots, im not trying to rip the floors up so what would any of you recommend for leveling out the floor? its not like the 3 spots will fall apart of you step on them but more like there is some flex when i step in those spots with all my weight on one foot(im 165lbs)...

Howdy, and welcome to iboats. That's a sweet looking boat. I like the older ones myself. I'm smack in the middle of redecking my '84 Wellcraft. I only had one soft spot in my deck and didn't want to tear it up either, but I decided that if I'm going to redo the seats and upholstery and carpet, I might as well make sure the deck is going to last as long as the new stuff. Chances are that if you have flex in the deck with a 165 lb guy, your deck is weakening and it probably is beginning to rot a little which will only get worse when it gets wet again. I believe that most folks usually find more problem spots once the have the deck pulled up such as wet foam, stringer rot, or transom rot. Not saying you have any, I didn't, but I know that I will sleep better knowing that I thoroughly checked it before I started building a new interior. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing your progress.

Add a couple layers of fiberglass. The experts on here will tell you whether that means matt, cloth, or both.

got similar advice from a freind but will this truly work? the captains seats are NOT being mounted on traditional pedistals mounts, were actually mounting them on the sub boxes with the subs firing down for best results. rear seating will be a bench seat so not one spot will be put under a lot of stress

If the stringers and transom are ok, then for a quick fix a few layers of glass would be good. That boat looks like it was well taken care of. Is the soft spot around where the gas tank is? You may inspire me to start tinkering with mine again. If you set up the new interior with a nice bench in the back and new upholstery that will be one sweet boat. :D

Re: 1984 Chaparral 187 resto

one of the spots is near the tank and the bench seat would possibly cover it, the other one is on the left side where the old back to back seat was. my worries is that with standard captains seats and the bench, that front left spot is going to give me problems.

the other thing to figure out is what to do with the high and low spots. i can but dont wanna build the new interior on an un even floor. any idea of an easy way to "even" out the floor?

Re: 1984 Chaparral 187 resto

got the rest of the rotten wood out today. on each side of the hull there was a 2x4 that was glassed in making a shelf. the wood was rotten for the first two inches. i cut them down. got the carpet glued on the deck tonight and letting it set to do all the trim work. maybe will start all the side and bw carpet tomorrow night....

So what did you do to fix the deck? The new rug looks good. Is the paint on that original? You may want to reduce the size of the pics before a moderator see's them. Post more pics as you make more progress.

the paint is orginal! all i did was use some good compunds from Flynn's and it came out better than new(minus making a complete mess all over everything that i wasnt buffing).

Re: 1984 Chaparral 187 resto

finally done!

let me know what you guys think. i laid all the carpet, built all new console panels, all trim panels, had to make new backing panels for all bow seats and cusions, contructed the rear sun pad and bench seat. the bench seat removes so that when we take out two 100lbs dogs out, we have more room.

actually got it for sale. what do you guys think i could truly list this boat for
