preparing to remove bravo 1 for shift cable replacement and bellows etc and needed clarification. in the service manual it simply says install engine and align, however, do you have to use realignment tool if you just pull drive and service it and never spin over the engine? just want to make sure i have all tools and parts when im ready to work, thanks.

It has nothing to do with spinning over the engine. You just want to make sure that the shaft slides through the gimble bearing with no pressure being put to one side or the other, causing premature bearing failure or shaft damage. This is one tool that you will need and use it every time you pull the drive...

thanks, that makes sense. im going to have to get a second job just to afford the flipping tools to maintain the drive, guess its cheaper than paying someone though.

You can get what you need on eBay for pretty cheap...

You can also make an alignment bar if you have access to a metal lathe. A drawing is available up in the Adults only sticky.

I bought one a couple of years ago....if you are going to do the annual R+R of the drive that you SHOULD be doing on any sterndrive the tool pays for itself in about one hr of labor (tool was 80 or so...Sierra one....my local shop charges 105 an hr....)
Get the tool...build an outdrive stand and get the OE manual if you want to keep a sterndrive going for a long time...it's not that hard and I think I save at least 550 a year doing my own tune ups...drive R+Rs...and winterizing....
