Re: What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

Those of us posting here are savvy enough to know that the higher horsepower muscle cars always get a few more bucks over the standard issue motor. Someone mentioned the 57 Chevy. That same car, but a stripped down 210 post with fuel injection and a 4 speed and dog dish hubcaps will be worth more than almost any other 57 made that year.
Also, some of our newer cars with big horsepower have that potential on down the road.
For that reason I submit the two Ford race Mustangs being sold. They are called the FR series of cars, built by Ford and sold thru select dealerships. One of them is a drag car and the other is a track car. Last year the FR500 drag car had only 50 made. The price tag was 70k. I submit that one to be considered....

Re: What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

It is so hard to say what WILL BE a classic. If we had that crystal ball we could go out and stock up on that car and make a mint in 15 - 20 years. However, fads, likes, and designs change so much that it is really the present that dictates what the past "classics" will be. I mean, who would have thought a 4 door 1963 Oldsmoble F-85 would be a classic? As a general rule, they are not, but I have one with 2500 miles on her (you read that correctly, no zeros were forgotten). My dad sold it to a mechanics wife right after the mechanic died (mechanic would NEVER let his wife own a new car and she wanted one). She would call us up to change the oil, inspect it, charge the battery, etc ... in short, we put ALL the miles on it. 15 years later she calls us and wants to know if we want it for $500! Tell her we will pay her more, but no, we have treated her so well and her daughter didn't want to drive 300 miles for a 15 year old car! Belts, hoses, tires are still original ... still paint on the engine. Yep, she is a classic, and have been offered a pretty penny for her, but as of yet, she is not for sale ... not until someone comes up with a high enough price.

That car had available a 215 ci all aluminum motor. GM made them for a couple of years to compete with the first run of "compact cars" that started showing up with the Falcon, Corvair, Valiant and others to combat the gas crisis of the early 60's. Those compacts evolved and by 64 the F-85 and Buick clone, Skylark all grew in size. Back to the motor, some were made with a turbo and put out 215 hp.
Lots of power to weight. GM sold that motor to British Leyland and it found it's way into the Range Rover. In 1979-81, Triumph put it in the TR7 and called it a TR8. Fine little car. MG also put a few in the MGB..
That motor was still finding it's way into LandRovers up to the 4.2 and 4.6 you see stamped on the rear of those vehicles. In England, some have stroked and bored it out to a max of 5.0. Sorry..kinda derailed the thread, but reading about your Olds brought all this on!!

Didn't the movie come out in 1977 and use a 1977 TA?

Re: What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

I've got a flawless fully loaded 1999 3000GT (pearl white). I'm hoping it might be worth something someday, but it may not matter as my wife is emotionally attached and prolly won't sell it. :D

That was my dream car in college in the 1990's. A college friend of mine back then when they were 50k (can't recall exactly) had two of the VR4's while I had a 1984 Chrysler Laser rusted through the floor boards. Is yours the twin turbo VR4?
My pick is the mid through late 1990's Pontiac Bonneville SSEi with the 3.8 liter supercharged engine. I just sold the one I had for years this past summer and the guy drove 10 hours total to buy it due to its condition for an insultingly high price. My wife thought I was insane for the price I asked and it sold in the amount of time it took for the guy to drive up here from the minute I posted it. I say any car that has a website devoted to it will be a future classic.

02-05 Ford Thunderbirds
04-06 Jeep Unlimited
FJ Cruiser if in fact they stopped making them
Dodge Magnum
Aztek (ugly as hell I know)
Avalanche
I think the new Camaros & Challengers will stand a good chance.

Yea, the paint scheme and striping were first used in the 50th anniversary addition in '76. It was a hit, so when the re-tooled the headlights and tail lights for '77 they kept the color scheme and it was used in the movie. '76 has one round headlight on each side, the "real" Smokey has square headlights. Wheels are different also.

By far, ANY unmolested Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX or Eagle Talon TSI. These things have an unbelievable following in the tuner market and it's allready next to impossible to find one that's unmodified!! If you have one of these stock and in excellent condition I bet it will be worth a fortune in another 10-20 years. A fortune I tell you.

It's like how muscle cars are now, restored one is nice but not that special, but something nice in unrestored condition is worth a fortune with the important factors being rarity and desirability.

I had a '91 Daytona with the 3.0 in it...pretty little car with a lot of motor in it...always wished it was offered with the turbo , like the smaller engine options they offered for it that year...it still would chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift (automatic trans).... mine was the white one with the decal on the sides...it had a black bra on it when I bought it too...looked awesome with it...... I owned a couple of 1970's Fiat Spyders when I was in college...those things would go forever on a dollar of gas...I forget what year they were , but they were the rear engine type.....how about the Triumph Spitfires.... awesome body style on them ....

Re: What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

lets not forget the early '90s Toyota Camry and Nissan Maxima.....they have quite a following to... (I bought and sold 3 of them last year)... loving my 98 Camry LE 2.2 right now... the ultimate in durablility.... I still work on many of the early Toy's and Nissans , most of them in the near 200,00 mile range (my 98 just turned 200,000 miles, dipstick is clean oil befor oil change,3,000 mile intervals)... I bet the early Honda Preludes will do well to...with the four wheel steering...

All cars have a following for every Chevelle fanatic out there there is a Caprice or Buick Electra fanatic.
Basically anything that is in good shape, taken care of and not clapped out will be sale-able. Probably not at some of the gigabuck prices as seen in recent years.
I think some of those folks were in a bit of a bubble themselves but stuff is worth what someone will give you for it so smoke'm if ya got'em.

Well...of the modern-ish stuff....say 1980's or 90's or newer, I guess one I would mildly bet on would the first version Hummers. Not the Hummer 2 or 3 or 2.8 or newer 'family/girl' friendly stuff......the 'original' one aka 'big daddy'. Maybe not just yet, with the gas situation still, but in a few years down the road. That said, vehicles going into a collectability/classic situation never seem to be attached to the cost of fuel in my opinion.
Apart from that, the Corvettes never seem to go away fully on the value at least not for long although the late 70's and early 80's vettes seem to not have a lot of takers (for obvious reasons).
I'll have to keep an eye out and see if any others get me thinking about this.
all good

Good responses. Sometimes a valuable car isn't necessarily the one everybody THINKS will be valuable. Fieros are a good example. Weren't they built on a Chevette platform?

That's a good one, and I think YES it does belong on the list!

How 'bout these: the mid-80's Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and the mid-70's Mercury Capri. Wonder if there's any really nice ones still around...
The early cars used off the shelf parts, the steering and front suspension were from the Chevette.

Actually based off the x-body cars...Cavalier.

The really only good Fieros were in the last year they made them.

Not sure why but 2003?2004 Mercury Marauders are sure popular and expensive.

Jeep Cherokees or Grand Cherokees...No Way!
