6 horse red mercury starts runs then stalls

hello everyone i have an old 6 horse mercury and it starts fine you put it in gear and away we go then when we go to stop it idles for a bit then stalls, so we restart it and go to take off again and it dies out like there is a lack of fuel or something but if you take it out of gear and rev it a bit it comes good so put it back in gear and take off but as soon as you stop it all happens again could someone please help

How long have you had motor?
I am no expert here but I would start at your fuel tank and work your way in.
Check fittings,fuel lines,primer bulb,tank ventilation.

If the motor is new to you I would suggest going through the entire fuel system for starters and whatever questions you have there are plenty of folks here to walk you through it

Start playing with the idle adjustment screw, if it does not work then you need to clean the carb thoroughly.

yeah i was wondering about the fuel tank the primer bulb thing might be stuffed cause you can keep squeezing it and it does not get tight its an old steel tank but in good condition so i might try and get a new hose for it

CHECK THE GAS.Dirty carbs come from dirty tanks! ! !

ive had two motors that the bulb wouldnt prime hard. i cleaned the carbs on both of them and after i did both primed hard instantly. get rid of the old gas clean the carb and try again.

Thanks guys we took the boat out for a run this morning, got about 300m then the motor stoped then wouldnt start again,so out come the ors. we got home and started pulling the top off too have a look at the timing and found the point were nearly closed so adjusted them up to spec then started it and it fired strait up and ran nicely till i gave it a bit of throttle and it stalled so played with the air mixture and wound it out two and a half turns which was perfect the idle leavled out realy responsive throttle now then seen a bit of gasket hanging out of this long narrow plate up the side of the block where the is a chamber that goes through to the cylinder pot put a new one of them in it and it runns sweet as now
