Mercury Mark 6 1955 Clutch-Lower Unit

Hello,

I am rebuilding the lower unit on a Mercury Mark 1955 vin that had a broken clutch cable.

Now that I have the lower assembly unit apart I can't figure out which way the Z shaped steel piece goes that is lifted by the clutch cable.

In the drive shaft side of the lower unit, by the spring that connect the drive shaft to the propellor drive shaft, does the end point of the Z shaped piece point up or down. I have no parts diagram so I've winging it here.
