oil ratio for a 1956 fisherman 5.5??

I have a 1956 fisherman 5.5hp motor and i cant seem to figure out what ratio to use can someone PLEASE help me out?

20:1 is the recommended mix

I run 24:1 in my 55.

For many years OMC recommended 24:1 in pre 1964 outboards, but recently BRP has specified 20:1 for pre 1958 models.

I have no idea why the change. There are thousands of '50s JohnnyRudes out there that have been successfully using 24:1 for over 50 years. I used 24:1 in all of my pre-1964 OMC outboards after the 1964 spec was published, but before that I used what was recommended at the time, including 16:1 in a few.

Safest bet is 20:1, but if she were mine I would use 24:1 simply because a quart of oil is a very convenient amount to add to a 6 gallon tank. It would be a pain in the butt to have to add an additional 6.4 ounces.

We did discover the metric system a number of years ago--or at least we tried to. The main difference is we all had to buy another set of tools. And we still can't get it through our thick stupid heads. But we do understand a litre of drinks. Now, if the rest of the world would convert to inches, -----nah, not going to happen either.

So just how would that simplify mixing 20:1 in a 6 US Gallon tank??

The 6USG tank is standard here, and has been for at least 60 years. What could be simpler than 1 qt oil for the 24:1 outboards and 1 pint oil for the 50:1 (really 48:1) ones?? The oil usually comes in pint and quart containers.

Maybe you use 20 liter tanks?? That could explain the Canuck company asking for 20:1 and selling the oil by the liter.

Stick 20 litres in it. add 1 litre of oil. What could be easier!

To make 50:1 (or 2%) you'd add 400cm?

I have a 6.6 US gallon plastic tank that's what I do. If I top up from a 5 litre can I just add 100cm? oil.

My British Seagull, that I use on my dinghy, runs on 25:1 so that's 4% or 40cm? per litre.

You have a decimal system of money 100cents to a dollar. We used to have 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shillings to the pound. (?. s. d) You imagine struggling with that .. so much simpler now we have just 100 (new) pence to the pound.

Now you are going to tell me that your gas pumps still deliver in gallons! and I though America led the world, not trailed behind!

I agree that it would be simpler IF we could buy petrol and TC-W3 oil by the liter and were willing to not fill our tanks.

We can't, so it is simpler to add 1 quart of TC-W3 to 6 gallons and settle for 24:1.

My 1958 five and a half evinrude fisherman has a label inside the hood, it specifies one half pint of SAE 30wt outboard or SAE automitive motor oil with each gallon of regular gasoline.
Thats 3 pints per 6 gal.

That spec has been changed twice since then, a70, and no longer allows non-TC-W oil.

It does support the point that things have changed a lot.

I've been mixing this ratio only with TC-w synthetic two cycle, the engine came with a 2. something gallon tank so I add 1 pint. Should I not be doing this?

You are mixing at 16:1, assuming that your tank is 2 gallons, a70.

That is more than you need according to the latest BRP recommendations, but more than you need is not harmful, except maybe to your wallet.

If you want to run the recommended 20:1, use 12.6oz. with the 2 gallons.
