I.L.6 L.U.interchange

hello,could anyone tell me if a gear housing off a 1986 ser#a902436 fit on a1974 115 ser #3945429 match up.i picked up this motor and has a chunck missing out the back,i have an extra housing for the 1986.both motors are mercs.Thanks CB

They are to different style lowerunits, BUT will bolt on and work fine :), they also got the same gear ratio...
and
The older 115hp housing got a straight skeg, and the newer housing got a backswept skeg .

Are internal differences so you can't mix all parts between the 2 housings, but if you are thinking about using the whole LU.... both will bolt on to ANY inline 6 produced between 1972 and 1988 ( +some older models )

Thanks,i have an extra one lying around to use it needs a reverse gear replaced i will fix it or ,let me ask you this could all the internals of the older one be put in the newer housing beacause i have a empty newer style .Thanks for your help

No, there are internal differences ....

Some part will interchange but not all ...
Propshaft, forward gear ( + bearing ), pinion gear, shift dog, ALL gear shift parts, top part waterpump will interchange...

Driveshaft, bearing carrier, reverse gear, lower part water pump , top bearing driveshaft will NOT interchange... well some parts might work... but by the book...

Thanks looks like i got my hands full with this one ,it may not be as done as fast as the other with the distributor and all .THanks again
