I noticed last time out gas / oil leaking out under cavitation plate from two small holes each side of motor. Does anyone know what causes this leak and if i should be concerned with it? The motor ran terrible and would bog down and die giving it full throttle that day. I bounced bottom of motor off loading ramp hard when i unloaded that day. Before when i went out, motor ran like a champ. Not sure what to make of it. new to outboards here. leak lasted for days after when i unloaded boat and brought home. Wasnt big leak kinday greenish color.

Might have had a stuck float causing flooding of a cylinder and a corresponding dribble down the motorleg, then out the weep holes. Pounding it on the ramp might have loosened it thus better running. Greenish ooze might be cracked or otherwise leaking gear box. Check oil level and possible water intrusion. Milky oil.

I looked for cracks on the gearbox casing found none. Only fluid oozing out weepholes. Motor smoked alot that day out and ran fine as long as i didnt give it full throttle then it would die untill i slowed it down. I will check gear box oil and replace. thanks for your help. Someone at the dock said it was normal for leaking there and mentioned unburnt fuel leaking out. Think that could be case?

Re: 85 force outboard please help

There are some real savy motor heads on here, but until they chime in I'll help all I can. Heavy smoke could be - wrong fuel oil mix/fouled plugs/plugged recirc. system. WOT stalling could be -fuel pump diaphram/carbs need cleaned and adjusted/timing. Yes on the weepage being unburned fuel but should only be minor. If your leaving an oil slick, thats too much and adjustments are needed.

They are called "weap holes" for water from the mid leg & unburned gas/oil which is what you have. take a look next time out when you pull up the motor & you'll see water coming out. totally normal. even the unburned fuel..

50-1 oil/gas mix. keep tank vents open. could be dirty fuel line. try new plugs or clean what you have (surface gap only).

Re: 85 force outboard please help

It's possible when you bounced the motor on the loading ramp ,you dislodged some trash in the carb bowls that has been accumulating in them over time. Might want to pull the carb bowls and check for trash and float setting. The fuel we are privileged to use now days usually has alcohol in it, which attracts water and tends to break down certain rubber fuel hoses from the inside if it's the older type hose. Pull them apart and keep us posted on what you find . MOPARMAN ROLL TIDE NC 2009

Re: 85 force outboard please help

thanks for your help and some ideas where to look. It did bounce pretty hard at the dock and noticed an oil slick in the water. It ran pretty bad and wanted to die WOT every time but ran fine at slower speed 15 mph. I did put in fuel that morning and i think i may have used more oil in the gas than i should have. I am waiting on mail for a clymer book i ordered to work on the motor and am prepared to clean carbs and bottom oil before fishing season. Can you remove the carb bowls with that one screw at bottom in middle? I bet they have not been off in awhile. thanks again for all your input.

Check your lower oil. If it is not milky, don't lose any sleep over it.

Black oil from the weep holes is normal as exhaust gases/oil gets into the lower cavity area and comes out the weep holes.
