Sup guys, Im new here on iboats, not to long ago I became a boat owner 1993 capri 2050, boat had rot in the back of the deck, so I deside to replace the deck. I have a few Q's 1) If i remove all the foam from the boat, do I need to replace it, or could get away with out it? and what is it for anyways? 2) What would u recommend to cover deck with, instead of carpet, something strong rubber like non slippery. Thank u guys.

Welcome 69. You've come to the right place for help. The foam is a flotation foam and it's for what it's called, flotation and even some support. Everyone has different opinions on whether you should replace it or not. If it's only a small area, I probably wouldn't replace it but again it's your preference. As far as the deck goes take a look at friscoboaters thread. He used a product called Durabak. Looks like a great option. There are other products as well. It would be awesome if you have any pics to share. We all like pics of the boat and work your doing. It's very helpful to others as well. You can use sites like Photbucket to post on here with. Good luck and have fun.

Technically, the Coast Guard says boats under 23' (I think the number is) are required to have flotation foam.

It's your boat though. You can do whatever you want with it. I personally chose not to...like a popular poster here says, they only out it there to rot your stringers...

If you were ever to take on that much water though the foam would keep the boat from completely sinking giving you something to hold onto.

I'm thinking of going with some dri-dek...I haven't tried it but it looks like a good product

Thanks for your help guys, I'll try to make some pics and post them. Probably I will stay away from foam.

i'm also in the the middle of the same project and decisions to make as you. I'm proabably going to replace the foam as it adds support and deadens hull noise. i think i'm also going with non skid flooring. I havent chosen a brand yet though
