Hi all!

I am impressed with the interest and support for folks in here so i thought i'd add my project to the mix.

Just moved to FL and thought a little project boat would be fun to try to tackle. Have boating experience - but took on a project quite like this. I wanted to build a custom classic with plenty of power that would be economical and handle bay chop. Also want to do it as inexpensive as possible.

So, I have been watching local craigslist ad's and found a 16' powered by a 1978 Merc. 800 Thunderbolt with hydraulic steering. The boat had been sitting for 6 years and the guy just wanted it hauled away - so, I stripped everything off the boat - the steering is smooth. I have a marine engine buddy and am having him give me the 411 on whether or not it is worth fixing. It looks good and it was a boat a guy brought down from Michigan and then he "disappeared." I know it was running 6 years ago so I am hopeful it can be brought back to life with a reasonable investment.

I got a windshield, controls, steering, motor and a ton of parts off that boat. (and I am going to cannibalize the trailer too!)

Then I located a 1964 Starcraft Fury with (most of) a trailer. The boat need to be totally gutted - but I got it for $70 - so, for a grand total of $70 I am starting the project.

I will keep this post running and hope anyone will pitch in their ideas as I am a total newbie with minimal experience. I have owned a few boats before and have done minor repair - but this one is a lot more.

As you can see, I will need to replace all the stringers and I want to put MORE glass in the bottom of the boat as it has quite a bit of flex now that I have it torn up. Figure I need that because I am going to add an 80 HP motor so it will need to be beefed-up.

I am thinking I need to remove the top of the boat just so I can really get in to the bow area - any advice there? Im hesitant to do it, but I think it may be worth trying.

Planning to cut the shield in 1/2 for a low profile look and going to strip the boat (which was originally blue) and paint it yellow with black and white accents.

dont know if I want to cut the transom out - thinking of just having a huge metal plate fabricated and seeing how that looks. I need to check the forums to see the best way to check the transom.

Anyway here are some photos - thanks for looking!

Welcome to the world of boat rebuilding. First off, great looking boat. I think you will have fun. I'm assuming that the boat that has no motor is the one your rebuilding? You should remove the top to make your work a lot easier. By the looks of the pics you will have to replace the transom as well. Don't feel overcome by this, take your time with and have fun. Follow my links, I hope they will help. Others will also chime in as well. There is a ton of help here and great and helpfull boaters. You've certainly came to the right place for help. Good luck and dont' hesitate to ask questions.

Thanks! All help, advice and support appreciated. After doing the grind yesterday morning I was thinking that it would be a lot easier to work on if I did remove the top.

Any suggestions how to do that? I'll pull the rubrail to inspect it - but any tips would be welcome. I'll review the links later today.

Thanks!

Remove the rub rail. There will be either rivets, screws or both underneath. Drill out the rivets, remove the screws. Also look underneath for fiberglass patches and cut those, if necessary. Good luck.

Thanks! I removed the rubrail that was in bad shape tonight and see that all the screws that were holding the rubrail are pretty much rusted out - and the fiberglass lip on the topside looks pretty stressed and drilled out (looks like the rubrail was re-attached a few times over the past 46 years!)

I guess I'll just add that to the glasswork I'll need to be doing!

Also pulled the plates off the transom and I'll be doing the seacast calculations later this week because I definitely need to pour a new transom. This boat is going to be stripped all the way down and built back.

I'm a bit nervous about replacing the transom and all the stringers - Hoping I can get it done in a couple months working some weekends and evenings.

Thanks for your help!

CM,
Welcome to iboats and that's gonna be a nice looking Old Skool boat when you get it finished. I can't help much on the glass work, but at least I can follow the journey!

Hmm - that interesting because the hull ihave doesn't look the same... Mine has the "wood slat" look - and this photo has the hull being flat. The title I have says it is a "1964 14' Starcraft" - but, I wonder now if it is....

I am also doubting whether the project is worth the investment or not. The transom is totally shot and I found a (not great) repair about half way up the left side today. Also concerned with how much damage I will do to it when I try to take the top off (most all the screws are rusted at the head and what is still in the holes is not - I am having a heck of a time getting them out so I can lift the lid.)

Think Ill try to get it all separated and see how much damage there is - if nothing else I have two trailers I can combine in to one and I can keep looking for a hull to re-build.

ALso getting the compression test back on the 78 merc tomorrow. fingers crossed.

Thanks!

I had to drill the head off my screws on the top. Then remove the stems with vise grips. Not sure what damage you have on your transom, but as long as the outer skin is intact, then you can replace the rest of it with a little work. Most old boats you find may need transom and stringers replaced. It may seem a bit overwhelming but if you take your time, read some of these builds in this forum I think you may find it is worth it. Good luck.

By the way, I think you do have a 64 Starcraft.

Yeah you guys are right. I should have looked at all of the pics. I missed the lapstrake fiberglass. Your boat is either a Siren (20" transom height) the red one, or a Cobra (15" transom height) the blue one.

They're both rated for 15-45 HP and the only other difference was the seating layout.

I'll try and do better next time :D

I will be following your restore! I just bought A 1964 starcraft 14' siren like the red and white one in the pic posted above. looks to me like you may have the other boat in the pic just going from the color. these are really cool looking classic boats. Mine has a 64 Johnson 40 hp on it just as in the pic. I am also a Newbie. First glassy hope we can help each other out. With all the great people here on iboats where in the best place we can be for info! Good luck on your resto
Thanks John
