bottom end movement

the bottom end of my 69 40 hp johnson has a lot of movement.is this due to the rubber seal is bad?is this a easy fix?this engine belonged to my dad and i think it is a long shaft.john

Broken rubber motor mount (s). There are three at the bottom and three at the top. You will notice that the motor floats on rubber mounts within a "shell". It has to come out of the shell to replace the mounts. Degree of difficulty depends on your mechanical aptitude.

i used to work quite a bit on cars years ago and have all the tools,hoping to do this with a johnson manual

You should be fine. Take some pictures of everything before you take it apart. Don't force anything. If you run into issues, post a photo or two and ask questions. The guys on here are VERY good and helpful.
